    laptop taking ages to start

for no apparent reason, over the last few days my laptop has been taking *ages* to boot up, and runs quite slowly........and i really cant think of what it might be.

    Any1 any ideas?

its not a virus or spyware by the way.

loads of shite on the desk top?
try going through the registry and getting rid of any shite thats in there which belongs to programs you havent got installed anymore

i do this every 4/5 months, seams to help a bit

    are you sure?

u been un-installing stuff/installing stuff? Or have u done what most people say when u ask them what they did to the computer, i.e. " i haven't touched it. didn't touch it. i wasn't messing with owt. never installed the P2P software. it wasn't me - it must have done it itself."

Something must have changed - otherwise 1) registry could be fooked. 2) Hard disk could be failing.

    all kinds of things.

i doubt its the hard disk cos once it starts its alright, just starting up is a real bitch.

desktop is minimal as i dont like it crowded.

I have only installed stuff for uni - vb6 and cisco router sim - but it was slow before that.

Its just in the last few weeks that its been going so slow.

where in the registry would i look?

    well still no joy.

tried a few system restores, one worked, but then other programs ended up shafted.

I have done virus scans and spyware scane....not found nowt there.....so I'm just going to to a factory restore when i get home....not got much to lose anyway, its more customisation than programs that I will lose.

    pain in the arse.

Question - is it when your laptop is plugged in or not?

my mates one has powersaving on it, the whole thing slows down to a crawl when it's not plugged into the mains, even though it's a P4 :spangled:

true, but its fully up to date, and I have hardware and software firewalls, my laptop never connects directly to the net, at home, it goes through my pc, and at uni its through their servers too.

ive backed up all my files anwyay, time for a fresh start.

By bootin do ya mean actually loading the interface (Ie desktop)?

Try runnin MSconfig and cleanin up the boot process.. take off all the shite that u don't use that loads in upon loggin into windows..

This'll speed up the boot sequence.

If ya mean boot as in Post and DOS then I'm lost..

    (Might be time to reinstall..)

There is prolly one app that is hanging on win launch. As soon as you can (after windows desktop appears) ctr/alt/del and go to the processes list, order them by CPU and look what is hanging at the top (using the most CPU % but ignore the 'System Idel Process'. These sort of problems are often casued by anitvirus stuff (norton in particular in my experiance).

    spot on

    nortons a nitemare for that!

also can be networks not properly configured...i.e. havent specified an ip...so its tryin to hunt for one..till it realises there aint a DHCP server runnin...can also slow things on bootup

i checked the running processes, was only running at 4%!!

I doubt it will be the network, as there have been no changes to the config of it to make it go slow......also it does not need to log onto a domain, its just as a single machine and gets its ip dynamically once its logged in as its bridged with my pc!

Anyway i fixed it, all nice and fast again :)
