    knackered boot sequence?

    ok.

So my computer was working fine. Just spent an hour setting up a wireless network and that was up and running too.

So I take advantage of my new internet connection and update AVG and also the windows updates. Reboot.

It loaded up into windows, after about 5 secs it reboots again and then went into this loop. gets into windows (maybe trying to load an app at startup) and reboots.

Now its iffy about booting into windows, just get the system check then where it should load windows it just does nothing.

What the hell is going on? I'm thinking somethings altered the boot sequence or theres an app it doesnt like when in windows?? :spangled:

I've tried running the XP recvering tool. But i dont know how to use it? I select repair then am left with DOS type command prompt. How do i repair anything from here?

Also is there a way of booting into Safe mode automatically?

keep pressing F10 at boot to get into safe mode. then uninstall some stuff you just loaded then boot back into normal mode.

type chkdsk /r at the recovery prompt - it should replace any dodgy or damaged system files automatically ;) may take a while like.

As for getting into safe mode, hold down F5, or F8, or shift when the machine is booting up.

You could also use a repair install of windows, just press enter to install instead of R when you're at the install screen

    reet well its happened again....

Have pinpointed the prob to a windows update after the restart to install em it fucks up.

The odd thing is the comp downstairs works fine and its had all the updates installed. Have microsoft released summat that fucks up dodgy versions of windows?

It is dodgy like.... but ive never had any probs dloading updates ever. :spangled:

Other thing i thought was that as ive just setup a new wireless network and both comps are both online with the same dodgy version of windows/key. Will this have something to do with it?!

That wouldn't do it. My laptop and PC both have the same serial for Windows XP Pro (it's the legit uni copy too).

I had a similar problem with one of the first versions of the "Malicious Software Removal Tool" when it was released via Windows Update... My shuttle PC hated the thing and it always hung when it tried to run it... whereas the laptop (an old p3 jobbie) was quite happy to run it....

I don't let my PC install the updates automatically now anyway incase this sort of thing happens, I read through the update lists, google them for known issues and then install them if they're ok.

Alternatively, bang repeatedly on the keyboard in a random manner until the screen decides to appear

One of those things that they really should make standard...F1 for BIOS, F8 for boot options...would save so many keyboards

All hail the manufacturers who release bios revisions that don't include "Press F1 for setup" at the first screen
