    Keeping Pentium 4's cool

    Righto, here's the prob.

My uncle has a machine based around a P4 2.6GHz HT chip.

And it gets unbelievably hot :fuming:.

I don't have a single intel machine of this speed in my house - all my gear is AMD and my Athlon XP 3000+ (I know it's only 2.1ghz) never gets above 42 when it's idling, and never above 56 when it's at full load.

However, this PC gets to an average of 62 when idling, and it has hit the 80 degrees mark when loaded (at which point the safety cutoff kicks in and the machine shuts down.)

I've fitted a new intake fan (a large silent jobbie) as well as adding thermal paste between the heatsink and the cpu (because the idiot who built the machine didn't do it :dunce: )

The heatsink and fan are designed specifically for the motherboard in use, it has a huge yellow cradle round the CPU which you slot the whole thing into.

The case is a specialist one but it has lots of ventilation (especially at the sides and back.)

Is there anything I'm missing or is it meant to run that hot?

howay then what do you have it overclocked to?

i have the exact same chip. back in the day i could get it to idle at 27 derees, once overclocked to 3.4 it would idle at 35, not its only clocked to 3.1 and its idling at 41 degrees, its cutting out every so often and i have to underclock it when video editing. i cant be arsed to set a new frequency on it. i also cant be arsed to clean the inside of the cpu fan out and re apply some AS 5 to the cpu. basically you should have it tripping out at stock speeds with stock equipment, make sure the fans ok and check its speed.

by the way im using stock gear aswell.

It's not overclocked mate, it's the family PC.

    It's all stock components.

The fan runs at around the 2500RPM mark.

hmm sounds really wrong then. p4's run cooler than most processors. it may be heating up mor due to age. i think the same is happening with mine check the ambient air temp or whatever its called around the case.

Buy a new hsf.. a big full fucking copper job with a 92mm fan on it..

lol at the thermal paste.. some ppl just don't know what they are doin!

I've already tidied the case up - I've got a huge fuck-off 120mm red fan with three blades on it running at the front of the case. Even at 2000RPM the thing has more pull than a fucking vacuum.

The ambient case temperature is around the 25 degrees mark.

    Looks like it's a new cooler ;)

stock hs and fan, arctic silver 5.

now its pants and gets 40 idle. all the p4s my mates have at standard clock run cooler than any athlon ive seen
