Radio One 'Supremo' DJ Judge Jules has admitted to illegally downloading MP3 files from file-sharing websites to play at a recent gig in Wales. This quote taken from his website.. "...So on the week that the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) announced it was initiating prosecution against a number of illegal downloaders, I found myself doing just that. Scouring unauthorised file sharing websites I found all the big trance classics I was looking for. Morally and legally I don’t know where I stand, downloading tracks that I’ve got but can’t find. tbf he probably does own them......if you own a copy of the track it shouldnt be illegal? just like burnung a backup of a cd you own.
I'm sure it's ok to make a back up though so long as you own the original?? The BPI can kiss my arse in that situation, I want to keep all my tunes in perfectly new condition, so i listen the backups I have made
me too Infact I am soooo conscious about keeping stuff in perfect condition, that I actually back up before I buy
nah, they won't, they are only targeting "major uploaders" at the minute, I think those who just have a few hooky copies and mixes are still quite safe. We are talking people who upload gigabytes everyday are the ones who the BPI are after, a recent report claimed something like 20% of file sharers are responsible for 70% of the overall download problem, so it's that minority that they are going after.
Fair point there mind, esepecially with the smaller labels, they should definatley offer legal download sites. I would be happy to pay 99p for tracks. Perhaps warnings for the downloaders but I think they labels consider the major uploaders more of a problem at the minute. Quick Fix - Juski has a point, how is it really any different when an artist gets sent it for free? If you REALLY wanted a tune and the only version you had was a good quality MP3 that you had downloaded, would you not play it? The only person that would know would be you.
it probably already is.. i cant imagine half the vs bootlegs he knocks out have had authorisation from the owners...
Even DJ's like John 00 Fleming say its hard to tell a difference in sound quality versus an uncompressed file once you hit 192kbps bitrate on mp3's. Most 'releases' on mp3 are always 192kbps or above in quality aswell.
The whole music industry needs to get out of the 80's and sort this out. I'm bored of hearing about single sales declining. Why don't the record companies sell them as downloads - or am I missing something
can i ask something..just out of interest... is every single piece of software on your pc legit? have you paid for it all and have valid licenses? just wondering...
its exactly the same as the software developers who spend hours/days/weeks/months/years developing software... maybe not so much the big companies but the little guys who try write software to earn a living.. jus cos u feel more strongly about music dont make it any different
