    From Within

A seminal debut from Nottingham's own rising star

"This is how trance is meant to be: beautiful bosh that takes you to another place" Mixmag on Jon O'Bir

Though Jon O'Bir may hail from a place known more for its merry men in tights than cutting edge music, in 2002 he did his part to turn that image on its head. Beating out 300 other DJ hopefuls, Jon succeeded in capturing the mercurial attentions of the dance music scene, and of course, won Passion's M8 Magazine's DJ Mix competition in the process! Soon Jon began making regular appearances on shows like Pete Tong's Essential Selection for Radio 1 and Armin van Buuren's 'A State of Trance', building an army of Alist supporters and exposing his trademark sound to eager ears all around the world. After a sensational 'Essential Mix' for the BBC in 2006, Radio 1 offered O'Bir a live broadcast slot on 'The Residency' alongside Eddie Halliwell and Nic Fanciulli. However, these initial experiences on the UK's most listened to radio station were just the beginning. Each new step quickly led to the next opportunity until Jon found himself working some of the hottest Radio 1 events from 'One Big Weekend' in Sunderland to '10 years in Ibiza' live from Space. Call it fate, or just talent, but by this point there was no denying that this stellar artist was destined for greatness.

Receiving incredible support from the start for his O'Bir/Gareth Emery co-productions 'Escapade', 'Bouncebackability', and 'No Way Back', Jon soon hit the studio for his first solo track "Effectual". But whether in the studio or behind the decks, O'Bir consistently manages to exceed all expectations, even warming up for the biggest names in dance music from Paul van Dyk and Tiesto to fellow Brit Sasha. Nowadays, next to traveling the world as a trans-continental DJ, this former Godskitchen resident has a few other things on his mind. With a keen instinct for killer tunes and an undeniable crowd-connection, Jon has spent the past year busily hosting his very own radio show 'Ways & Means', acting as label manager for his label Conspiracy Recordings and producing his debut album From Within.

Of course as with all his productions, O'Bir had no shortage of supporters eager to check out his latest creations. But after hearing "Ways and Means", "Ascendancy" and "Sunrise" it came as no surprise that Paul van Dyk snapped up the album for his own legendary VANDIT Records. "Jon's inspired productions are becoming a standard for the best in melodic, electronic dance music " and his newly released album From Within is no exception. (Interview, Paul van Dyk). The album kicks off with "Can You Hear Me?", a track that carefully walks the tightrope between its supremely delicate melody and a driving wave of energy that even at its peak, never seems to upset the balance. Artfully produced with a startling mixture of subtlety and imagination O'Bir exhibits a sophistication far beyond his years, proving once again that this young producer is just beginning to hit his stride.

Weaving seamlessly into lush segues like "Taken" that are at times so dreamlike and beautiful that they almost feel like futuristic lullabies, O'Bir leads his listener though a veritable soundscape of incredible breakdowns and heady beats that leave hearts racing and ears craving more. But who could ask for more? The entire 14 track album from "Dreaming" to "Inflexion" is such a work of overwhelmingly artful brilliance that its easy to get lost in the swell. The few vocal laden tracks featuring Emi and Lizzy Parks stand out as the sole anchors of the album, somehow managing to pull listeners back from the euphoric crash of O'Bir's ethereal sound into something a little more tangible, even if only for a moment.

Above all, O'Bir's debut isn't just an album, its a step toward greatness for this up and coming producer. "He's still young and has already established his name with the trance elite" but that is just the half of it (Interview, Armin van Buuren). Though not yet 25, the rising popularity of his productions, radio show and record label, all point to a very bright for Jon O'Bir. Unpretentious, unpredictable and unbelievably good, this album, like the artist is definitely one you don't want to miss.
