    Jobs

Probably had this thread on here a million times but I cant remeber seeing it.

What does everybody do for a living on here?

Do you enjoy it? If not where would you be/hoping to be in your ideal job?

Where do you see/hope to see yourself in 10 years time?

Just interested as I still don't know where I want to be after leaving school 4 years ago, suppose its just a case of trial & error until I do, lol.

I work as a network engineer for BT.

They've classed me as a "flexible resource", it means they assign me to a project and I work on it for 6-12 months. After that I get moved onto another project which could be anywhere in the country.

If I have to travel to work they pay for it, and I've got the option of working abroad if I wanted. I also get discounts on loads of different stuff, free unlimited broadband when I get a house, and access to free CISCO training if it's deemed relevant for my role.

As for the future - I'd like to have a go at setting up my own company and doing it myself once I get enough experience :)

I suppose I'm not doing too badly considering I came out of uni about a year ago. Did a BSc & an MSc, now I'm earning enough to afford my own house... scary stuff.

I work for a marketing agency in central London, have done for a year now.

It's great, I get to travel- Turkey last week, Hong Kong and China in a couple of weeks. Some decent perks too, as I work on the UEFA account, I've been given a ticket to the final of Euro 2008 in Vienna at the end of June. The whole trip will cost me nothing.

Don't know how long I'll stay for, but it's good to be able to finally put my marketing degree to good use 4 years after graduating.

    that's sweet!!

I'm currently working for an IT company whos primary business is IP Telephony (VoIP). I'm also the network admin and "mr workstations" (which i don't like...i dont care if you have an error message on your screen...)

Client base is round the UK and Europe. I get to travel a bit, spent alot of time in Bristol lately in the Marriot and off to Amsterdam soon I believe for a new project. I'm also penned in to go to the states (San Francisco) later in the year for a conference, and the company party this year is in Barcelona at the end of May, all expenses paid!

Been a bit bored lately but I suspect that the next few months will see me far more involved...i just need to get the certification, which i'm doing next month.

I see myself in this position for 1-2 years - i'd like to do what Conway is doing though!

I'm a Transport Consultant for a Consultancy firm which is part of a global engineering firm called Jacobs Engineering.

Basically I do Transport Assessments for small projects (i.e. if Tescos want to build a new store, will the surrounding roads be able to cope with the influx of traffic?) but I'm starting to specialise in micro-simulation, so simulating the effect of changing roads, junctions, building new roads, etc etc. Currently working on various roads in Sunderland, County Durham, and Lincoln...and should be doing a load of work for Gateshead soon.

I learn pointless facts like how the average person walks across a pedestrian crossing at 1.2 metres per second

Oh but I will get to travel a bit more once I've had more experience - have offices worldwide and it's an American company so hopefully will get to visit some of them :D

Perks? Errr...well if you've ever played Sim City - that's pretty much what I do all day! Ha!

I have my own business, Ainscow Recruitment Ltd.

Set up just short of a year ago after working in the industry for 9 years. Done my work experience at an agency, offered a job at the end of it, and been doing it ever since.

Worked my way through various roles, from resourcer, to consultant, manager, area manager, director and finally managing director for myself.

All sounds good, but trust me, running a business is as tough as it gets!!

Wouldnt change a thing though :)

So if you work in construction and are looking for work, let me know!

Well I work @ Travelex (Foreign Exchange Bureau), NCL airport & hate it. I knew it was never gonna be a job with great prospects or anything but after a close bereavement I was out of work & had to take it. Only staying at the minute for holiday spends but I'll be out of here come August. Basically just sit here alone all day on 12 hour shifts in the baggage hall. (hence the amount of random threads I make ha.]

My ideal career can go down one of two completely different roads, either dropping down to a part time job to try & get a course in Accountancy/Finance & hopefully progress from there or either back into a construction apprenticeship preferably Plumbing as this is what I found myself doing on leaving school (but for a shit company that fell flat on its arse) or Bricklaying as i worked with my Father for over two years doing this.

I miss the banter & weekends off that come with the building side of things. But now at 20 there is very few companies that would be willing to offer me an apprenticeship (to my knowledge).

In 10 years time, I would love to see myself as a qualified plumber either subbying or giving it a bash myself starting up on my own.

We'll see, always live in hope :angel2:

    Plumber/Heating Engineer for Morrison

    Yes, I love it

Probably either Foreman or on the maintenance

I wanna continue as I am for 2/3 more years, with work and clubbing. Then Im gonna rent my flat out and go travelling for a year or 2. Then come home and do something similar to what I'm doing now, and look to try and move up the ladder after a couple of years

I'm a sales agent for British Airways in Newcastle.

Get to do loads of cheap travel, basically pay 10% for my flights and get cheap/free hotels and the money is good.

I really want to get into car sales though. This is something I'm looking into at the moment.

I'm a paralegal at a law firm in Newcastle. Currently working through "college" (distance learning atm) to become a Legal Executive.

I mostly do repossession sales and act for the Council in Right to Buys. It's not the most interesting but it pays the bills.

Ideally I'd like to think I won't be doing this for the rest of my life.. haven't quite decided what to do instead though, hence doing exams and stuff so at least I can earn a few more quids in the meantime.

.... Own my own Ltd Company and i work as an IT Contractor.

Its a class job, but you have to permanently be on your best behavior and put up with constant jibes from the permanent members of staff in the places you work at, cos you make more money than them.

I change locations up to 4-5 times a year so theres never enough time to get sick of the job, or the people - cause you know you can be out of there whenever you feel like it.

Its paid off all my debts in about 9 months, and paid for alot of luxuries - so its wonderful at the moment, but i definately think the next few years are going to be a massive struggle as the economy suffers.

You win some you lose some.
