    Job Centre/Employer Stupidity

Not really of any relevance but I had to vent my sheer surprise at this somewhere:

My lack of graduate employment is well-charted on here, and the state of affairs has come to the point where I'm applying for ridiculously poor jobs. I rang up today to apply for an 'Administration Assistant' position that I'd seen advertised last Friday, and was told I wasn't suitable because they were only taking on people who had been on the dole for more than six months!

    Am I going fucking mad?!

Probably because they're far more bothered about targets than providing a service.

At a guess, reducing the statistic of "unemployed" people is far more important than finding work for a graduate with a thing for crevattes and cream silk jackets...

So I get half marks then ;)

I share your pain mate, I was doing something similar after I graduated. I was told one of two things by every employer for about 6 months after I finished my MSc:

    1) I was overqualified

    or

    2) I didn't have enough experience.

I couldn't get experience because I'm overqualified? WTF?

Or maybe it could be because it part of the young persons guarantee/backing youn britain initiative which is to create a certain amount of jobs for young people who are struggling to find work and have been unemployed for a certain period. These jobs are not jobs that have just suddenly became avaliable they have been created specifically for these types of people to get them work experience and have to last a certain period and hopefully lead to permanent employment. However if the people who apply for the job are not suitable or the vacancy is not filled they are opened up to the general public.

Oh and if you want to blame the stupidity on anyone don't blame it on the employer or the jobcentre blame it on the ministers whose bright idea it was to come up with this initiative in a knee jerk reaction meaning there was no choice but to implement it and use the guidance drafted.

its mad some of the jobs my mates are applying for after doing really good ones before they shut/downsized/realised they were actually numpty's! One mate has taken a job in gateshead and he lives about 90 mins away, on a good run, another had to take a re-post in Normanton! and drive from Darlington and back every day, madness.

they're taking on at our place at the moment due to the volume of work created by the job centres / dwp being so busy.

As part of the New Deal initiative, companies who take on New Deal (those unemployed and claiming JSA for 6 months or more) will get a subsidy from Jobcentre Plus/DWP/The government. It's about £1,500 per new deal client they take on. This isn't just new though, when I first started looking for proper jobs about 9 years ago Barclays in Hexham wouldn't take me on for the same reasons.

I got made redundant at the beginning of the year and, after signing on for some months, now work for DWP/Jobcentre Plus.

    Any questions? Ask away ;)

Allie - Go onto dwp.gov.uk and see if they're still taking on as well. That's how I ended up here.
