Is this safe? Right. Sick of having to truge between rooms or send files over msn when I want to transfer files from my pc to laptop and vice versa. Instead, I have mapped the C Drive of my PC to show up as a drive on my laptop. Used the net use command, and works fine. Now, I have ran several security checks on internet sites and it says my pc is secure. It's only accesible over the internal network that I have in my house, but is there anything else I should be aware of or can use to beef up security a bit? I'm not particularly bothered cos it seems ok but its worth checking! Cheers!
Re: Re: Is this safe? or move away from windows suse 9.1 m8 - lovin it!!!!! dabbled with linux for years n years - think av finally made the move now tho...does everything i need and does it WELL solid as fcuk n like shit off a stick...and thatw WITHOUT me tweaking it to get the best out of it
Re: Re: Re: Is this safe? Is it better than Mandrake? I would run it but my mam and Grandad need to use Windows! I could always put it on a second hard drive or partition like. Went to download it but have no idea which files I need, why can't there just be one?! As for the Network Share worms, theres a few new ones been discovered this week. These are pretty advanced stuff, they reply to REAL mail, with a REAL subject line - gonna be a lot harder to spot! I have been pretty lucky in terms of not getting any worms or viruses, then again I know more than your average Joe about computer security, especially with regards to the internet! So I should be able to keep it out
Keep yer virus definitions up to date! simple as! Why would u want anything else at home other than Windows? Patched and Serviced Packed, on a fast machine - XP is great. dunno what the big deal is... it's a home PC!
Fair play, but some people like a change! I am unlikely to go Windows Free, but I may dabble in a bit more linix
Re: Re: Re: Re: Is this safe? been runnin it since fri and it seems a lot better/quicker/stabler than mandrake... v v impressed. the dvd image is on suprnova.org
wrong - simply keeping ur virus definitions up2date WONT keep u 100% secure from all these viruses/worms etc.. the problem with windows it M$ take sooooooooo long to release patches - most of time its too late!!
im concerned for the safety of my router tbh... it's safe as regards connections / firewall passwords etc, BUT i can't enable WEP on it. right now, it isnt really such an issue, no-one in my street would try it, nor do they have wireless networks, but naturally this could be a problem in future... i acess the router's setup page, tell it to enable WEP... and it crashes, router freezes, have to go and reset it, after resetting - no WEP. the router is a Origo AWR7210 - the help pages / forums etc are @ www.adsltech.com , but i aint been able to source any help from there yet... any ideas?
no net for 5 hrs... and its still kinda funked now.... i want to find the twat that did this and rub his face in the pile of crusty kleenex next to his computer
I didn't see anything to that effect He just pointed out that JUST having up to date antivirus isn't going to keep you trouble free, which is a fair point!
if you : A) have a decent firewall (or three ) and B) A decent antivirus and you keep them both updated, as well as windows updated, you should be pretty safe... my setup is pretty strong now - apart from my WEP problem, of course. go to shields up! ( https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 ) read everything, do the tests, see just how safe ur system is... mine passed everything %100 , apparently as far as most systems are concerned my system doesnt even exist, because it's stealthed and doesnt even reply to intrusion attempts.
no, i said keeping ur virus definitions up2date will NOT make u 100% secure....theres more to it than simply keeping these up2date... that alone is NOT enough...thats what i was saying
u were wrong cos u were making out like simply keeping ur virus definitions up2date was enough.. it isnt..so.... ur wrong
