    Ipods / MP3s

Right, i know naff all about these, but im going on holiday on Tuesday and want to get one before i go. Dont really wannna spend much more than £100 if i can help it. Ive got 45gb of music, but tbh an 8gb player will do if it keeps the cost down. If i can get more, then great.

I have had an Ipod before, but it was a big fat one which i havent used for 3 years. mainly cos the battery used to die in 90 mins or less. And it barely worked at all last time a tried it.

So i think i want something small(ish). Doesnt have to be tiny, just not the size (and weight) of the original Ipods.

What are the main differences between Ipods and other brands?

I tend to use Itunes to organise / play my music on my computer. Can you use it to transfer stuff on to other brands players? Or does it depend on the file type? Because i notice some of my music is MP3 and others are M4A files.

Which ones have good battery lifes?

Any answers to the above or any suggestions on what to buy appreciated. :)

I still reckon ipod is your best bet. especially seen as you have mp4a files.. the battery life has definitely improved with the newer versions... maybe a nano?

my ipod battery has been great so far and I've had it for 4 years. you just have to make sure it's totally fully charged then play it till totally flat every time. and don't leave it sitting on the charger for hours on end. mine still plays for hours on a single charge.
sorry that sounds smug but it's true though

DONT FORGET A PROPER MAINS CHARGER - otherwise you'll have to find a usb port to charge it!!!!

Yeah, my Sony happily plays for about 9 hours. Ipods are a fad. Boils down to the fact that people think every mp3 player is an Ipod and that's all there is out there. Far better ones on the market. (Just checked and the Sonys had 36 hours worth)

It doesn't have an expiry date, they are and always were a fad.

"ooh doesn't it look cool with it's itunes and whatnot"

    I'll stick to my Sony.

You can get reconditioned nanos from Currys for about 40quid. If you only bothered about having one for your hols why pay for a brand new one

    Cheers for the suggestions.

Ended up buying a Sony NWA 8gb yesterday. £40 less than a Nano and it plays M4A files too.

    fail.

Rossy you tool - they are a fad, but it's a bloody good one at that. 24 hours battery life and nice presentation and browsing/organisation system.

Audiojack into my mixer and its partly my music library in my room, and i always take it to work and bang out hard techno while making peoples food. score.

    i fucking love mine.

The Sony ones are merely another representation of the fad by other means. to bite ones style some would say.

A bit late, but apparently Creative Zen were about the best around, but that was a couple of years ago. No idea now.

    Damn I'm helpful.

MP3 players in themselves aren't a fad, just Ipods. People have been listening to portable music for years.

tbf - i think that apple have actually done the PR and Ad's in the way to make it a fad, i dont think it'll ever die out, but i rekon they've made a shitload of coin off it.
