    interview with sean tyas

So Sean why don't you tell us abit about yourself? How old you are e.t.c

My name is Sean Tyas, I'm 26 and I'm currently living in St.Gallen, Switzerland. Although I am originally from the U.S.A.

Sean you’re a rising star on the trance scene at the moment. I know that your productions are making a big impression on people here in the uk.
When did you first discover dance music?

Haha, well I guess when I was about 10 or 11, I was given a tape by my uncle. On it were several mixes of a track O'Fortuna, by Apotheosis (the original). I sat probably for days listening to the mixes on repeat. And I fell in love with this sound.

Thats cool, so do you ever go clubbing? If yes where to?

Right now, I am embarassed by what has happened to the whole Germany, Switzerland, Austria clubscenes. They were once regarded as top of the line, but now, everyone has jumped on the commercial pony, and all you can hear in "most" clubs around here, is house. Finding the events where you can hear trance, or simply some dance music that doesn't only promote sniffing cocaine, is fairly difficult.

You can proberly find alot of that in the uk haha

Ahh i have no problems with it around, that wasnt the exact point. I am more taking a stab at that whole fake glamour shit, promoted by the house scene. Getting dressed up to go out and dance. Bullshit.

Yeah the too cool for school approach...
Being orig from the usa, was the scene over there different?

The main difference was the noticeable lack of big names on a global level. USA has more local heros. Places like NY, LA, and Miami book the hell out of euro talent.

So do you have any clubs or nights, that you hold close to yourself? which have memorys that will will never forget?

Well in the late 90s, we still had the club Twilo in NY, that place was unreal. For one, it has a near-perfect sound system, a Phazon, for those who know. So everything was crystal clear, and you would walk out of the club without your ears ringing. Not to mention the perfect vibe, the people who went there, all knew who they were there to hear.

So it was a pure clubbing crowd there for the music?

Totally, in a time when you could see PvD, and still have room to dance how you wanted. Unfortunatly it has been closed down for years. It is heavily missed.

You have been signed to discover records, but what other labels are doing it for you at the moment?

Hmmm, Really anything on Afterglow, Reset, Liquid Recordings, ATCR, Vandit, & Conspiracy. Ones that are hit and miss (only because i'm not a huge fan of proggier stuff) are Anjuna and Armada. My favorite song right now is Nitrous Oxide - North Pole on Anjuna. Perfect track, right down the line.

Who are you idols in terms of production?

John O'Callaghan gets a wonderful sound and mix, Bryan Kearney is a whiz at gettin little intracacies and details into his rhythm, Greg Downey just comes out swinging. Activa is friggin amazing when it comes to tying a bunch of small elements together into one very big sound. Sander van Doorn is my idol on the percussion side of things, and Paul van Dyk would have to be my idol when it comes to writing a melody that sticks in your head

Interesting, alot of praise there for you discover stablemates...

There was a reason i tried to get on this label...

Who would you most like to work with in the studio?

I suppose I would really like to work with Sander van Doorn, to see in person how the man survives using Logic on a PC.

Haha, so what do you use in the studio? be it hardware or software?

100% software. Running on Logic PC limits me in a few ways, being that the software is about 3 years old now, and many new synths do not work properly. The ones that do, well, they make the cut. But I just love how logic flows...when it wants to of course...

Where do you get inspiration to make music? or what inspires you?

Just the general vibe and motion of what goes on on a dancefloor. The intricacies in a track sound so amazing on a club system, where the tweeters really separate everything from the bass stacks, and the tracks have this 3D feel to them you can never get at home... Thinking of that, makes me want to make a track.

So on a DJing side of things who are your inspirations and which dj's are doing the business for you at the minute?

Hmm, my inspirations are simply watching the hands go up on a dance floor during the "fire" of every good trance song. DJs like PvD and Ferry Corsten are simply aces at this.

Which dj’s and producers do you feel are going to be the stars of the future?

Tough Question, as there are more djs and producers every second... More tracks coming out, more mediocre mess to be bought up or downloaded illegally. But as far as those who are truly worth checking, watch for Thomas Bronzwaer & Activa to really spearhead things a lot.

What tips could you give to any aspiring dj’s and producers?

Years ago I would have said get a mac. But now you have 3 very good options of making music as well, Cubase, Reason, and FL. My only advice is try all of them, and if you do have a mac, try Logic. And learn things on your own, read books, view tutorials.... Nothing is better than knowing you did it yourself.
On the djing side don't play whats popular. Play what you like. Play what you make. Learn options other than vinyl.... You can do tons with CDJs and Ableton Live as well. What matters most, is the dancefloor

Do you think the digital revolution is perhaps responsable for the dimise in dance music?

The demise in dance... hmm.... Its not dead, its very alive. Just trance is just not the flavor of the month, it'll come around again. Look at it this way
Pop culture in the 80's was the main thing, sure you had the punk rockers, but it was very minimal. The grunge came in the 90's
and i think most people, for the first time in a while, really cared what they were listening to I think at this point we are back to the pop culture phase, and then people will care again.

So do you not think that trance has taken a back seat with the recent bonbardment of cool house and electro?

I totally do think it has taken that back seat. Its in the "bitch" seat (middle seat in the back), meaning if something goes wrong or something happens, trance always takes the brunt of the pain.

You are making your UK debut at Home in Doncaster on June 9th, what can the crowd expect from Sean Tyas?

They better expect to dance. And sweat.

How would you describe your sound or the sound you play?

Tech trance. Trance with the rhythm and energy of techno.

Aside from dance music, what other artist do you like?

Moby, which I would say isnt dance anymore, so thats fair play. Other than that, I don't like anything else anymore. Not saying it isn't good or that I don't respect it, I just don't go out of my way to listen to it.

What cd do you have in your player atm?

    ferry@mayday 2006

What is your favourite gig you have played to date?

Probably the Emerald City , Philadelphia booking in January. Mostly because my younger brother opened up for me, my youngest brother was on the dancefloor, and the crowd was really there to hear trance.

Lastly where do you see yourself or hope to see yourself in 5 years time?

I just want to be consistent. I am not here to revolutionize anything or even try to. I want to get better on my studio work, I have many things I still want to learn. So in 5 years, I suppose the only thing I know I want to be, is alive. oh yea, and having sex.

    Haha thanks a lot Sean.
