Installing Windows XP as a second OS

OK, I'm getting sick of my internet cutting off all the time in Vista when I'm either downloading torrents or playing online games. This never happened in XP so I'd like to install TinyXP as a second bootable OS. Trouble is, I've got two 320GB hdd's in Raid 0. Raid is all new to me and although I know the basics of what's going on, I'm confused as to what method is used to install XP.

I've just tied restarting my pc and booting the TinyXP disk and it did the initial windows XP pre-installation checks and then gave me the blue screen of death. Do I need to have a third part raid driver handy before the install? Am I ok to install a second OS over 2 Raid 0 drives that aren't freshly formatted?

RAID0 shows up as 1 logical 660GB drive, so I would imagine (but I don't know for sure) that you could use a partition tool such as partition magic to create a partition in the unused space

funnily enough, i'm wanting to install XP as a dual boot too, although not in RAID.

my internet never cuts off like, but the machine takes 2 mins to boot!

I'm pretty happy with Vista now that I've got used to it and somehow all the initial bugs that seemed to be present when I first started using the machine have now gone. Only trouble I'm having is with the internet and I suppose that's TalkTalks fault because they are a useless bunch of cunts.

If you're wanting to install XP you need to goto Computer Management > Disk Management > Right click your hdd > Shrink Volume > Specify **MB to shrink

This will free up the specified space which you then format as NTFS.

Now you're free to install XP :)

BUT, make sure you download VistaBootPRO as you need this to enable dual boot with Vista or something. I haven't actually done any of this myself yet but apparently you need to install the app in XP before you can go back to Vista.

Also, when you're shrinking, it may appear that you don't have anywhere near as much space available to free as you have unused on your hdd. If this is the case, defrag your hdd. If it's still the same, there's other things you can do such as deleting pagefiles and system restore files etc etc. although you'd have to find a more comprehensive guide to do it properly ;)

The only trouble I have is with Raid. I don't know if i need to find some specific drivers to use as i'm installing windows. Or if this Dell PC is even built to work with XP.. Their website doesn't seem to offer any support for it :(

In what way is it gash?

It would sometimes stop responding in XP (says it's still connected to the internet but nothing will work) and the only way to resolve the problem was to reboot. Didn't happen as often as the cut offs seem to be in Vista though. That said, it seems to have been good today.. only a couple of cut offs.

Download speeds are still good though.

are you using a router for your connection or the standard shite modem and talk talk dialer?

i get booted off the net a canny bit, its like clockwork at weekends, starts early saturday morning and will be ucking useless for 6 hours or so then it might be alright but slow for most of the day till the night and itle do the same thing and again through sunday. the speeds i used to get were ranging from 750-1mb per sec downloads, now i will only ge about 550 max of a empty server at about 4am on a school night. theyve proper cut back on torrents aswell, ages ago torrents on talk talk were unheard of, you got 2kbps and that was it then once they got a bit better it picked up, once they put me on llu it was mint, fast as fuck speeds all the time. they must have realised they were actually giving people a proper service and went back to being cunts cos the speeds have went shit again and the reliability is the worst i have ever encountered

Defo a load of shit atm. I sill think it'll be better on XP though. And yeah, I'm using a Speedtouch 330 cabled modem. My m8 gave me his router that talk talk had given him (long story.. he's with Sky now but still has the talk talk modem) but I dunno what to do with it as there's no instructions. I'm guessing a wireless router cant be used non-wireless? I dont have a wireless adaptor.

plug the adsl cable into the relevant port, plug the network cable into a port on the router and then to your pc

when you get an ip address, open a command prompt and do "ipconfig /all"

open up web browser and enter http://<default gateway IP>

this will get you into router

chances are login will be admin/admin, admin/password or admin/<blank>

Hmm.. the adsl modem has permanent usb connection, and phone/internet cable. Is this ok? IF so, I'm guessing that I need to plug the modem into the pc via usb, connect the phone cable from the modem to the router, the ethernet cable from the router to the pc and then another phone/internet cable to the phone line?

Sorry, I'm new to all this :p

nah, you get rid of that awful USB piece of shit :D

The router will have built in ADSL modem.

Phone line > router > pc

The router will then take care of your connection, no more using their dialer.

Oh.. I had a look at the router and couldn't see anywhere that said it has a modem included. I'm gonna get on it then and see if i can get it to work! :)

Just so I'm clear, will I get given an IP when I connect the router to the pc?

When I goto the browser and enter http://<default gateway IP> is the gateway IP just the IP I got above?

    :dunce:

Edit: Ah hah! I seemed to have sorted it.

So do I have to do anything else to set the router up regarding security/settings? Will it be sending out a wireless signal to all my neighbours now?
