    Installing drivers on a laptop

My m8 has given me her laptop to format cos it went tits up. All is fine apart from we don't have a 'manufacturer disk' with all the software that the laptop came pre-installed with such as video and sound drivers. I'm not sure how to find out which drivers I'd need and when going to the Toshiba website (laptop's manufacturer) I can't find the model number.. there's other variations that don't match :s

Model is A100-259 but their website seems missleading :(

    Any ideas? :monkey:

    right, regained composure...

Toshibas. re-installing without the original disks can be a nightmare as they use such specific drivers, not always included on the XP build disks - ALSO EVERY IMPORTANT, once you've got ALL the downloads (there's sometimes 30+) there will be a BUILD SHEET on that page, you MUST install the patches/drivers in that EXACT order otherwise it won't work

you'll need the NAME and model i.e. Tecra S1 or Portege M20, stick it in here : http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp

Failing that, i've got most tosh laptop disks as we support them - for a small charge i'll do you a copy of the recovery disks ;)

I had a feeling you'd be the first to post with something along the lines of rofls. :) I managed to find the list of downloads for the laptop by navigating to a different part of a toshiba site and it didn't say anything about any build sheet :s I downloaded the ati display driver, a realtech (or something) sound driver, and a few other things and just installed them randomly. What errors should I have encountered? Seems a bit odd that there's no warning on the Toshiba site.

it's function hotkey utility drivers that run along the top - enabling dual output, stuff like that - aswell as the power manager features - u think i'm lying just to wind you up? wind your neck in - this is a typical sheet in question : http://support.toshiba-tro.de/tools/Satellite/sa60/win-xp/install_xp_na_en.zip explaining the order they have to be installed in for example

have u tried any of the function keys at the top?

I've got an old Satellite Pro 4600 under my desk, and when I flattened it, getting everything back on was dead easy.

Just went to the Toshiba site, and downloaded all the XP/2K drivers for the laptop, put 2000 on it, installed said drivers, and it worked without any problems :spangled:

I know some laptops needs the drivers and bits installing in a particular order but surely it can't be that hard...

again, you read some of the forums, this isn't always the case with toshiba laptops

i only found this out cause i was given a sat pro to re-install and even though i put all the drivers on i THOUGHT it needed, the hotkey utils and drivers didn't work, after hours on the forums (no input from tosh - thanks guys!) all the other members could offer was to read that document, and install in that order.

yeah, mine came with the hotkeys, all I had to do was install a "common modules" package first, followed by the hotkey software.

Job done, and I burned all the drivers to cd in case I ever needed them again
