If someone has your sort code and account number...

Can they take money off you, buy stuff etc?

Cos im buying something off eBay and cheque is preferred...I prefer paypal cos it means I don't have to give any of my details....but the guy doesn't have a paypal account.

Is there any risk when using a cheque?

to buy stuff off your card you normally need security number (on back of card) issue numger ect, if its just sort & account numbers then i dont think you can buy anything with just them

When you set up direct debits and stuff all you seem to need is the account number and sort code and name, so I think you might be able to do that. But I think they generally ask extra security questions to make sure.

no mate they cant. they need your 16 digit card number , exp date and security code on the back for most transactions.. only thing they could do with ur sort code and acc number would be to open a Direct debit under your name... but theyd also need ur full name, Address, DOB as well. :D

Ive sent tonnes of cheques for stuff on ebay. Do prefer Paypal though, less hassle than writing out a cheque, finding an envelope, buying a stamp etc etc.

He probably sent threats to his unhappy customers by refusing to cancel an order of 150 sex toys and some E-Z-Lube unless they gave him a good rating ;)

I don't think those details are anything to worry about as far as being able to purchase things with them go. I know with online shopping you definately can't.

Yes well that goes without saying that alot of people use cheques bud!

    Prime example....o2 website.

To pay a bill, you put a sort code and account number in and the account holder..thats all you need....always better to be safe than sorry

Another thing about cheques....why the hell do people use them in shops....only to hand over the card for the same account?!

I havent a clue about anything like this.. types of credit cards.. cheques.. postal orders..

I have a debit card that either has money for me to spend or it doesnt. That's all I need to know :p

If the guy has a decent feedback like you say though, i wouldn't worry. The majority of people would probably feel more uncomfortable than they would lucky if someone gave them their bank details (providing they have good feedback blah blah). I know i would and i defo wouldn't risk getting done for fraud or losing my feedback. That said, it's still your money and I see why you don't feel comfortable.

    Why can't he use paypal?

No you cant do anything with just the sort code and account no. I just to get a lot of people asking me that when i used to be in telesales, but its the long numbr on the front of the card that someone would need draw money out your bank.
You can set up direct debits with sort code and acc no. and pay into someones acc but thats it. :)
