I need some nerdy help! Im clueless about computers so heres my stupid question: I have just got wireless broadband, with a router that only has ethernet ports (there are no usb ports on it at all either!). Problem is the pc only has usb ports and no ethernet so i cant connect up! Is there a way around this? Can you get a cable that has a usb connection on one end and an ethernet on the other or some sort of connector that converts either way? I really havent got a clue, will i need to get a connection installed on the computer or something? Please help....
I dunno if theres a way round it just using a cable but an ethernet network card can be picked up for about a fiver so its not an expensive problem to fix
just get a wireless adaptor they all connect to the pc via usb anyway, so you don't need to use ethernet cables
You normally need an ethernet connection to start it up in the first place though don't you? Go for a cheap ethernet card Dead easy to install, windows should sort all the drivers.
Something like this you mean? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Netgear-WG1...a_2/026-6235807-4580423?ie=UTF8&s=electronics
I hate computers!!! I have a wireless modem and 1 laptop with a wireless card adaptor. If i get a USB wireless adaptor for my desktop will this get everything up and running? Thats all i need to know girls. Thank you!
From personal experience, network cards are the way to go. You can get them on ebuyer for about a fiver, make sure you're buying one of the following brands: netgear, d-link, 3com, intel. Ignore anything branded as "value" cards, they're crap. Most of the intel ones don't need drivers and take all of five mins to install. Your router should have come with a network cable, if not you can pick one or more up here for around 50p each. If your computer is near the router I strongly recommend you just cable it in. A wired connection is always more stable and less likely to screw up than a wireless one. If thats not possible (eg your router is downstairs and your PC upstairs), go wireless. Some routers require you to plug the PC into it to configure it before you can use the wireless network on it: mine required you to plug into the router via a network card so you could set up the wireless security before it would let you use the wireless network.
