It completely depends upon how much you would like to spend.
Ideally, 2x1210Mk2s and a DJM-600 (my setup, as of next month! :p). However, not wanting to break the bank on your first decks, try something like the SOundlab DLP-32s, which is a great beginner deck. You'll grow out of it pretty quickly tho. You could always try something middle-market like the numark TT-2s, which I believe Little Dave has, so ask him.
DO NOT, by any means, purhase the TTX-1. trance_fan was one of the first DJs in the Uk to use these when he played @ Sapphires Open Day this Summer with Grandmaster Flash (I think it was him. Was definately one of the big Hip Hop DJs) and he hated them! Ask him for more info tho.
Mixer-wise, you'll not go wrong with anything made by Vestax. I actaully have a PCV-275 for sale, which is a little over a year old, and is still in top condition, but may be a little advanced, or expensive, for a first setup.

When buying your gear, don't go anywhere but Sapphires, www.decks.co.uk
Great staff and great prices, and if you find stuff cheaper anywhere else, they'll be happy to price match it for ya. If you call, make sure you speak to Eitanz. Great bloke. :)

Thanks for that Allie, so how much is your setup as of next month gunna set you back? :D

So....Numarks are ok are they? As I say i'm a beginner so forgive if i sound dum but........how do you grow out of decks?
I can appreciate there are more specialised decks.....is it just with features and that?

you will grow out of them cos u will be able to beat match + get better @ mixing, BUT cos your decks arent very good, they will hold you back. cos they drift out when u r mixing, dont have enough power, or start up fast enough! so u wont be able to mix as precisly as you would be able to on better decks!

    Ah.....but of course!!

Cheers for that... I've noticed in the reviews people talk about theit style of music.
I'm gunna be playing mainly trance and dont intend to do any scratching...will this make a differnence to the type of decks I should look at?

Vestax are a better battle deck, but as you aint scratching that don't matter.

Scratch decks like say the Vestax PDX D3s/2000 or the NUmark TT-X1 come with:

straight tone arms which make it harder to skip the record, great for scratching
More Torque (powerfuller motor, quicker start up time), great for scratching but also great for cueing the record, playing little samples, etc.

These are the significant differences - some old dj's who are used to feeble motored technics will tell you Vestax/Numark are too powerfull... They aren't, the more torque the better, the reason older dj's don't like them is because they're not used to so much power....

I'm going to start up the age old debate in another thread http://www.promisealways.com/messages/showthread.php?s=&threadid=8806

But I recommend the TT-X1 - they are the easiest deck to learn on as they're crammed full of gadgets (BPM counter and anb accurate pitch read), they also allow you to play around with records (playing them in reverse and stuff) when your learning to dj - toys like this make it a lot more fun, when you get to a decent level they open up new doors - dj'ing is all about inovating - the more features the more possibilities :D
