    How to improve 'the scene'

I was wondering what the best way to keep things positive and going forward in these lean times for the world.

Theres tons of nights happening in the North East, but i bet it can be hard to know whats going on and WHERE if people rely on fly postering and pure word of mouth to get the word out.

What about cross promoting each others nights (assuming no overlap) and harnessing the pure power of these message boards and facebook to make sure the pool of 500-1000+ people that the nights reach out to is being kept completely up to date with everything out there thats happening?

Wouldnt it be better if people joined efforts and ran nights in tandem with each other instead of trying to go it alone the whole time?

Are there really enough people to help small promoters break even with decent names?

I think its a shame that you have clubs like WHQ and Cosmic with two rooms that by and large could be both packed out with people?

Habit versus Neuroscience perhaps? :king::lol: .... or are promoters ego's too big to suffer that idea? (No that wasnt directed at ANYONE).

..... Seems like theres some immense talent in the NE that might be going to waste with everyone trying to hard to make it big on there own. I think its sad that Godskitchen can wade in and suddenly get 1000+ people all turning up to what is more often than not a complete dissapointment of a night (For me anyways, i dont like Digital)

habit at WHQ last week seemed to work really well - althought i don't know actual numbers.

Newcastle has a small, core crowd of proper clubbers each weekend - no where near what it used to be - i think gods works cause it draws the non-clubbers out who go for the brand - it takes a lot of effort to even get 500 people these days...

it's a great idea, but you'll have to pull the promoters out of their own arses before they'll even consider promoting a different night on top of thier own.

Exactly eh .... ALTHOUGH theres 1500 or so if/when a 'brand' turns up, or even when you take places like Shindig into account.

Habit @ WHQ is awesome, and maybe they dont quite apply since they are an 'established' small night, but with regards to some of the techno/minimal/trance nights out there, it would seem to make more sense to get these places pooling resources.

.... Club nights seem to create success upon success, which is probably why people turn up week on week to 'superclub' nights that arent necessarily all that good all the time, but people keep going. I think the idea of having a night where theres is a bit of everything (Like Detox ... to an extent) is a good one.

it's the mainstream effect of it all, digital basically has turned into a blu bamboo/tiger tiger type club in respect to way that people show up. the difference being that they put on more 'specialist' nights on.

that's why there's always a bucket loads of radgies and lasses that seem to have no clue whats going on, it's because they just decided upon going to digital simply because 'its digtal' not because 'DJ x is playing tonight' - which of course is how 'we' plan a night out.

I also think that displacement of crowds has alot to do with why digitals filling up with complete turnips every week. since there isnt really a place for charvers to go to on a night out (Ikon changing hands/style, the new monkey closing, regular Hanger13 nights not being as consistant). i noticed that to an extent at goodgreef on boxing day, Hanger13 was on at the academy which numbed the numbers of topless tribal tattoo's by about 80 percent. winner.

WE TRIED TO DO THIS WITH INDEPENDENCE LAST JULY and unfortunately there are some promoters who are only really interested in their own brand and do very little work to contribute to something bigger in the grand scheme of things

    thats all i am saying

I suppose you'd have a problem if everyone wanted to think that their night was the 'main room' night ....

... Still, from the little bits and pieces you pick up with how much these things cost to put on, the risks involved and the logistics of it all, i bet that there could be a way of running either dual nights, or having backroom's hosted by other nights that dont necessarily have big names on at all.

Maybe if poeple were more original in the sound there night pushed this would help numbers. Nights that have backroom playing the same music as the Front speak volumes about the lack of musical interest/open mindedness of the promoters.

Also newcastle is quite a closed minded sceney type of city with alot poeple not that open minded to different musical styles even if very similar.

Other than that it is what it is.I personally do find that some of the music i like is not being promoted up here as well as other citys in the U.K, but generaly there is something as a punter i would want to go to once a month in not more.

I constantly get messages on Facebook from people I know that are promoting nights "recommending" events ran by other promoters though??

Jaunt, Exhibit a, Cleer and Disco Noir, for example, are always sending out weekend recommendations for fellow promoters. So it is going on. Maybe others should consider following suit....

Tbf, I've just got one today telling me about Balance @ Attic from someone who's involved in a different night.

I wonder if the bigger-ish names will see the light and take on the corporate slime with guerilla tactics ;)

.... didnt digital want to have all the small nights in their backroom at one point? I think Melt mentioned this at the time of the half popular then damp squib 'revolt' with the Shingig and Wax on walk outs?

Not sure, but I'd love to see smaller nights host the back room at Shindig on a regular basis. I love it up there.

It's not like they haven't toyed with the idea though. As they've had the Riff, Raff and Uber lads on before. So they've made a consious effort to support local nights. Even as far afield as Carlisle with Uber.

certain promoters were informed months before that we were running that weekend

when nights at digital offer up the backroom to other promoters it is for one reason and one reason alone in my opinion - to pack more numbers in if they think it is going to be lean month

I havnt seen any evidence whatsoever of bigger established nights wanted to support other local nights

It's deffinatly possative how WHQ opened their doors 2 third party promoters for the first time in God knows how long on a weekend night. That's a step in the right direction although Im not sure if it was just a one off or they are considering it to happen more often?

I Didnt get to habit but have been told it worked well with their inhouse night downstairs and habit upstairs. To be fair it's still a quality size downstairs so they may aswell utalize it.
