a widescreen TV screen displays the 16:9 aspect ratio, while films are printed for cinema in 1.85:1 and 2.40:1

DVD's give you the WHOLE film yet if u watch say sky movies, they often pan to fit the screen ratio of 16:9

    check wikipedia : [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aspect_ratio_[/ame](image)

just different formats! the massive cinema widescreen format was created 50+ years to get the best from films - probably not designed with TV in mind due to the limitations of technology at the time
