Home cinema: setting up speakers/receiver/PS3/screen Right then. I've been reading around about receivers for driving some 5.1 speaker, and it seems that you pay a fair whack for an HDMI socket on them. What's the point of having HDMI sockets on a receiver? Why does video have to go through that to get to the screen? Why can't you just plug a PS3 video into the TV and audio into the receiver? Do I need a receiver with HDMI for this? Ta.
hdmi is also able to carry audio thats why it can go into some recivers, im in a similar position tho, ive got the ps3 linked to the tv via hdmi, but the sounds just coming from the tele, i can probably stick the red and white phono's into the receiver but im sure theirs gotta be a better way, my reciever has an optical port aswell like os might try this. what reciever ya got, im using a pioneer d514, canny entry level one, but does the job for most stuff
not got one yet, just looking at kit at the moment. I think the only HD source is going to be PS3, probs just switch between that and built in Freeview for telly I know I'm going to need 2 optical ins for this, but not sure if HDMI is better. Might pop down richer sounds this aft and see if they know.
hdmi should be good, seeing as the best content at the mo is 1080p and hdmi handles that a treat, if they advise ya on somet with the optical and ps3 for just audio only gimme a nod, im interested in getting the 5.1 through the surround sound. also i know alot of receivers can upmix inputs from stereo to 5.1, would this be the case if i plugged the red and white phones into the reeiver (having the receiver set to 5.1 setting obviously) or are the various channels still able to be correctly output using just the red and white outs from the device? that last bits open to anyone who knows a thing or two
