well stick a headphone lead into where the speakers go, if it plays sound it's the speakers, if not it'll be the soundcard

purvy, make sure in Control Panel under Sounds and Audio Devices, all the drop-downs point to the right soundcard etc. I used to have onboard sound and a soundcard in and to use each one u had to change the settings.

Also, have you turned the speakers on? ;) Also check the sound levels incase they're set to mute etc.

    Just have a fiddle

If its the only thing in the list then choose it. If you have more than one set of ports for your speakers to plug into at the back (or wherever they are) of your computer then you could well have onboard and a card. I know this is the most common reason for my speakers not working in the past after having a fresh install XP etc.

Make sure you've installed any drivers for your motherboard and/or soundcard too < Important! And also make sure the speakers are plugged correctly. It's usually all colour-coded these days. If you're colour blind just take a pic and we can guide you through your travels :dunce:
