Help me find an ISP that won't do me over for downloading

My contract with TalkTalk (40GB p/m data limit) is up next month so I'm on the lookout for a new ISP. It needs:

    • To be ADSL, not cable
    • To have a good monthly download/upload limit (e.g 60GB+)
    • To not be prone to sending out warnings about piracy (;))
    • Be <£15 per month.

I notice O2 does an attractive looking package for £7.50 p/m with up to 8meg down and 1.3meg up. 'Unlimited Usage' with small print about fair use policy.

If anyone could give a recommendation for this I may be tempted..

I don't but they offer ADSl for non-tv customers too. What download speeds do you usually get?

virgin do unlimited too, plus there's no fixed contract, so you can give them a months notice if you want to walk away from it.

plus I whore my bandwidth and they never complain.

Is that with ADSL or cable? After reading their website last night they seem more concerned with ADSL bandwidth than with their cable, for obvious reasons.

For the people with Sky, what download speeds do you get? (from fast servers/seeds/torrents) My m8 has Sky, and although he says he downloads stuff all day long he doesn't seem to get speeds higher than about 150kb/s. With TalkTalk I often get 500kb/s+

I'm not sure as I'm not great with computers.
Its miles faster than the Orange broadband I had last time tho.

I've got ADSL mate, so I can only speak for that. We've never had any problems with them though.

Hmm.. ADSL is the only option I have so i might go with them. I've used my m8's Virgin cable and it's always been excellent.

So what speeds do you get? And do you download plenty of films/music/tv shows? :)

I'm on the shitty consett exchange so the max I get is 1mbit. It seems quick enough though, and I download a fair whack in the way of tv shows and music without getting bollocked for it.

I think the possible max on the deal I'm on for speed is up to 8mbit.

right.. well I'll go with Virgin if nothing else comes up.

I'm still interested in the O2 deal though if anyone has it.

Virgin half your speed for the day when youve downloaded over a certain amount!

:s Any idea what the limit is? Most ISP's seem to be ver unclear about what their fair use policy is. Some have peak and off-peak limits, some just say 'Unlimited' and others state 40GB or something.

If the Sky one is in a different location it may just be your line/area. I was told off someone else that they regularly get 400-500kb/s downloads and no mention of it being unreliable.

Is it the ADSL you're on with virgin?

I need ADSL.. their cable service is a bit different to ADSL. Wikipedia says that bandwidth is limited if you use a lot, and is also limited during peak times.

I need to search for Sky reviews.

    I'm on 2 meg.
Once I've downloaded 500 mb for the day the speed goes down to 1 meg. Unlimited my arse.

I've had no bother with Sky, got my PC, Xbox 360 and Wii all connected at the same time and its still alright.

    That sounds terrible :s

I hate ISP's that advertise these massive speeds but fail to clearly point out that you'll only be to use it for a certain amount of time before you get letters in the post, fines, limits put on your account, speed cuts etc etc..

Sky is looking the best so far then :)

I'm on 16 meg Sky broadband max with unlimited downloads - cos of my location ffrom the exchange etc, i only get about 7 meg downlod with about 650k upload.

    only costs a 10er a month.

They do 8 meg too for a 5er but i think that has a 40 gig limit and the up speed is halved

How far from the exchange are you? I'm roughly a mile and I get pretty much maximum speeds with TalkTalk I think.

I'm defo tempted with Sky now.

Sky is OK, I switched recently due to cost (bt was £22 per month!) and i'm getting slower download speeds and increased latencies in games.

With bt it would be around 25ms, now it's upper 50s/low 60's
