Heartburn is caused by acid reflux, during which acid from your stomach passes back up to your esophagus. This could be because of two things: a weakened esophagal sphincter (the valve between your esophagus and your stomach), or an excess of stomach acid, which could be due to your diet. Another possibility is a hiatal hernia, but it's more than likely one of the above.

If it's recurrent, go see your doctor and he'll sort you out :)

Fried food. spicy food, food that is high in dairy and/or fat. Occasionally caffeine and things containing caffeine too (coffee, soft drinks, chocolate).

Possibly so. Get some gaviscon down you, if that doesn't help, go to your doctor. It can lead to more serious problems if not treated.

Apparently, smoking, alcohol and wearing tight-fitting clothes can cause acid reflux too. Maybe you should stop those three first? :p

Have you taken anything for it over the past 3 days?

ive had massive stomach problems which began with the exact symptoms, eventually was diagnosed with inflamation of the gullet pipe, got prescribed some tablets which sorted it

other advice i was given was to raise the head of my bed a couple inches so you sleep on a slant, really did help
