I've got my PC connected via DVI to HDMI to my TV.

To play Blu Ray etc it depends on your graphics card, then you need a program to use on it such as Power DVD.

I'd imagine your Laptop would have something bundled with it with it coming with a Blu Ray Drive.

You'd also need soemthing to carry the sound as DVI only carries picture. You could use a standard 3.5mm t0 3.mm jack from the pc but other leads could be used depending on the conection on the laptop/tv or surround sound amp if your using one of them.

As for the laptop being on yes you would have it on and have the tv monitor set as a second display either as a clone or you can extend the desktop. Best going clone if it's just for watching movies.
