SHOCKING MAGPIES BEATEN BY VILLA

Newcastle's unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt, as Aston Villa claimed a 3-0 win on Tyneside.

A well-taken goal from Juan Pablo Angel and two penalties from Gareth Barry clinched the three points - but the result will pale into insignificance compared to the shocking scenes which tarnished the end of the game.

Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were shown red cards for fighting amongst themselves - as Newcastle lost all self-control as their unbeaten run came to a shuddering halt.

Villa boss David O'Leary has been boosted by the news that he will have money to spend in the summer and it may have acted as a spur to his side, as they took an early lead on eight minutes - but the goal owed much to the shoddy defending of Newcastle.

Steven Davis' cross can best be described as hopeful, but it caused panic in the Newcastle box and Angel lashed his shot past Shay Given after Jermaine Jenas made a real horlicks of his attempted clearance.

Newcastle have found their stride in the last six weeks and they responded to the setback by creating a string of chances.

Jenas attempted to atone by clipping a lofted ball to Alan Shearer, but the Magpies talisman failed to test Thomas Sorensen with his header.

Newcastle came out in positive fashion after the break and the vast majority of St James' Park were pleading for a penalty moments after the restart, but Barry Knight failed to see what appeared to be a clear handball from J'Lloyd Samuel which prevented Shearer's header from finding its target - an unmarked Bowyer.

Angel had a chance to put the game beyond Newcastle on 50 minutes but, after eluding Jean-Alain Boumsong with ease, he dragged his shot disappointingly wide of goal.

A combination of Sorensen and the crossbar prevented Bowyer from finding a leveller and Newcastle paid for their failure to find the target as a shocking blunder from Nicky Butt allowed Darius Vassell to stride in on goal and he round Given before seeing his shot blocked by the hand of substitute Steven Taylor.

Knight had no hesitation in dismissing Taylor and Barry stepped up to rifle the spot kick beyond the Irish keeper to bring Newcastle's unbeaten run to a halt.

Referee Knight was not done and he awarded Villa a second penalty after Stephen Carr and Vassell tangled on the edge of the box, with the result being the same - Barry lashing his effort into the top corner.

Villa took a welcome three points back to the Midlands, but Newcastle ended the game with eight men after Dyer and Bowyer started fighting in the Villa half.

The pair squared up and traded blows, which left Knight with no option other than to send the pair from the field.

Newcastle had looked so good before the international break, but their season is in serious danger of imploding - especially as two of their better players on the day were sent off for fighting with each other.
