Gullit has blasts Shearer Former Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit has blasted Magpies' striker Alan Shearer, branding him the "most over-rated player he has ever seen". (News of the World).
Tken from the BBC site. Gullit attacks Shearer Former Newcastle coach Ruud Gullit has launched an extraordinary attack on Alan Shearer, branding him "overrated" and "a rotten apple." Gullit, who is now Feyenoord coach, spoke of his rift with Shearer following the striker's attack on Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson. Former Dutch great Gullit told the News of the World: "It was plain he didn't want to play for me. "I told him to his face he was the most overrated player I have ever seen." Gullit launched his stinging attack on the former England captain five years after he resigned as Newcastle manager following a bitter dispute with Shearer. He accused Shearer of being a selfish player who threatens to rule the roost at St James' Park. Gullit said: "He thinks about himself all the time. It's always about his goals and not about the team. "If we were going to succeed as a team I knew we had to change the way Alan Shearer played but he didn't want to change." Gullit resigned after controversially dropping Shearer to the bench for a derby against Sunderland which Newcastle lost. "The problem was that he had too much power. In the end it became a battle I could never win. "He was England's favourite, England's captain and he was playing for his home-town team. "All of that meant he was bigger than the club itself. "What could the board do? If they back the manager and kick him out they will have everybody against them. "They decided to try another coach instead but nothing has changed. "Sir Bobby has done well but the rotten apple is still there, the damage is still being done." Gullit also claimed: "There's a clique of mediocre players who think if they stick close to him they will stay involved in the team. "As manager I wanted him to play well and to score goals, but I wanted to use him in a different way. "Unfortunately, for some reason he didn't want to try. He's a good player, but he will never win trophies. "He has won one, when he was at his best, but after that, what? "He scores some great goals but it's the players who score goals and win trophies and championships that receive the real recognistion. "I told him to his face 'you are the most overrated player I have ever seen' but he didn't reply. "Maybe that's why they call him Mary Poppins because he is so innocent. But I know how powerful and ruthless he can be." SHEARER'S CAREER Games: 603 Goals: 347 Total transfer fees: £18.6m England caps: 63 England goals: 30 Honours: Premiership championship (with Blackburn)
I'm not one to kiss shearer's arse but gullit hasn't a clue at club management and obviously less idea at man-management... managing moneybags chelsea is different to a club like newcastle. I just hope feyenoord realise what they are doing when he takes over next season...
Whats gullit been on? I dnt ussually kiss shearers arse but wot the fuck is gullit on? Thats all I hav 2 say!! He hasnt gotta clue!! Hey! gullit
What a fucking toss pot ! Shearer - Overrated Given Gullit his dues he was a quality player in his day, he was however a shit manager and to be calling someone like Shearer for what he has done left right and centre for club and country is a bit of a piss take ! People forget he fucked off from Chelsea cos they wouldnt fund the payment for his Audi Car ! Fucking arsehole...
When Gullit was at Chelsea he had less money to play with than Newcastle spent in the same period. I read the News of the World today, and i'm not sure what to think. It seems to me that if Gullit had a genuine hate/dislike for Shearer, he would have said these things as soon as he left. But the fact that he left, then waited 5 years, then stated what happened, adds some weight to his words i think. The interview in NotW doesn't seem unecessary exageration, it just reads as though Gullit has recounted a few facts. I've no reason to doubt the headlines, although I've no reason to believe them either. Still, I can well imagine Shearer being exactly as described by Gullit. He does seem a pampered, self-important prick.
ive got no allegiance or dislike for either party or the team but id have to agree that he IS overrated.... imho.

I think Gullit was a legend, a better player than Shearer is or ever was. Not that I agree with all his opinions. Having seen Newcastle play from time to time the thing I always walked away thinking and saying was Shearer is NOT a great team player. He passes to individuals and it's so obvious what he thinks of some of his team mates.
excuse me but forgive me if im wrong...shearer is paid 2 score goals....and hasnt he scored the most goals in the premiership?? i'd like 2 know how he's over rated!
Shearer is undoubtedly a great striker but I can see Gullit's point in that Shearer probably does have too much influence in the club. Gullit was always going to be the one to go whereas at Man Utd where Ferguson and Beckham had a similar personality clash it was always gonna be Beckham that left
Fact of the matter is tho, most Toon fans class Shearer as a God. They can't seem to see past that. Thats the problem.
Only 1 man has scored more goals for the Toon, he deserves all the praise he gets. He does what he does better than most.
I'm not saying he doesn't. I do feel that some fans put too much importance on him tho and see him as being Mr Newcastle United. That can't be healthy for the player or the club.
I read the article, i can imagine in some respects he may be like that - but he works bloody hard on the field and i dont think there is any call to question his work rate... to suggest that he didnt give his all in the FA cup final (which he does) is fucking stupid.
