greggs does drive thru Meals on wheels Feb 25 2005 By Jamie Diffley, The Evening Chronicle It's the ultimate fast food - baker Greggs wants to create its own drive-thru. Greggs is looking at new ways of selling its pies and pasties to keep up with growing demand. And among the brainwaves is a chain of McDonald's style drive-thrus, as well as mobile Greggs' vans and even shops on the beach. Greggs, based in Gosforth, Newcastle, is building a second factory on Balliol Park in Longbenton to push production of its savories up from four million to six million a week. And they want to open up new markets after tasting success at its stores in Newcastle Airport and the UCI cinema in Gateshead's MetroCentre. Managing director of Greggs North East, Graham Randell said: "Greggs is very strong in the North East. "When we do our research we seem to be held in very high esteem. It seems to be that if we put it where people are the brand does very well. "The brand can translate from the high street to somewhere else and do extremely well. It has chucked up a number of possibilities for us, some of which will take time to come to fruition." Greggs moved into Newcastle International Airport in August and within weeks of opening it was among Greggs' top selling shops. Mr Randell said among other options were more airport shops and possibly even Motorway service stations. Plans for Greggs own drive-thrus are also being examined He said: "We are looking at all sorts of things at the moment. "Nothing is out of the question. Anywhere we can deliver quality and security of our name is where we are looking." He added: "These are just possibilities. We will try things but we are cautious as a business. Really, we always dip our toe in and a bit first and see where it is going." Jim Goudie, consumer psychologist at Northumbria University, said: "McDonald's style drive-thrus may well work for Greggs. "A lot more people rely on fast food these days. This is due to changes in their working lives. They are actually getting a lot busier and often work through lunchtimes or late into the evenings. "So many may find it easier to grab breakfast or lunch at a drive-thru. It will be a lot more convenient. "In the North East we have seen an expansion in the last 10 to 15 years of a number of fast foods outlets and they are all prospering." Greggs now has 1,263 shops in Britain with sales up in the second half of last year by 6%.
