    Geordie Dialect

Reading a thread a mo ago made me think of the sad decline of one of our region's cultural gems, the Geordie dialect ( along with Northumbrian, pitmatic, etc).

Just out of interest, does anyone on this board stil know / use these terms?

    Marra - mate

    Lop - flea

    Lowp - jump

    Fettle - health

    Howk - pick

    Flummoxed - confused

    etc

I think it's really sad that the tongue is becoming so homogenous across the UK, and particularly that speech is being so influenced by the US media barrage ( I hear charvers round my way referring to their car bonnet as its "Hood" !).

    Anyone?

PS, the Q at the top was not rhetorical and demands a practical answer :)

I have to say I agree with you mind Harry, we're definately losing the Geordie dialect. Not sure what a Northumberland dialect is though. I know somebody from Northumberland and she's incredibly posh. In fact, the way she says 'darling' = :king: ;)

Still, we should all start speaking more Geordie. It's being phased out because it's regarded as common.
