    I back them too.

The tax on petrol is a percentage of the price of petrol, so the government haven't exactly been quick to put a halt to it as it guarantees them more income.

The french government have already set up a tax rebate on petrol to try and relieve the high prices at the pumps.

My car has only got a small tank so I'll be out within a week. Looks like I'd better get the bike down from the attic!

    they're idiots.

we need those taxes, america is a prime exaample of why taxation works... half the problem with katrina was there wasnt the finance to maintain their storm defences... a lot of the problems with the after math was there wasnt the budget for education, employment, etc.

    society needs taxation.

this idiots could trigger a recession.

I agree with your points there Joe, but at the same time the prices cannot continue to rise as they are, it's affecting industry in its own way (hauliers for example).

Something has to give - even if it's just to stabilise the prices.

cutting fuel tax would barely effect the british economy as we're a nation thats main gdp is finance.

if we were an industrial nation the taxation of fuel would effect the economy in a serious way - but we're not.

there's not really now - there's just getting close to their 'emergency supply' 50 million barrels or something... admittedly the US's output of refined oil is down by 25% but thats cause of the loss of the refineries in the area of the disaster - there's still tons of crude oil

just a few scatty yanks and there SUVs panicing - and charvers in their impreza's who won't be able to donut as much in the silverlink car park..

actually londons are starting to date....

but storm defences a aside, our society prospers because we have high taxes.

I'd hate to live in america - our education is superior, our health care is superior, our everything is superior... you go down the cheap tax route and we all end up like wankstain yanks..

There's a big difference between London's flood defences, which are meant to stop the Thames...

...and New Orleans, where the city is 20 metres below sea level, and surrounded by water to the North and South.
