    a freeman of the city?

freemasons is some very secret society which you have to be invited into and initiated

a freeman, such as alan shearer, is just an old traditional i think, given freedom of the city and all that - but its not a secret society

    is that what you meant?

My dad was a Mason. I dunno exactly what they did but he had to pay money into it and regularly drive all the way from York to Manchester for meetings. They also had to wear funny clothes and had a mysterious handshake. I think it's a society for professionals. Either way, he's in an excellent care home which is run by the Royal Mason Benevolent Society, where he receives far better care than he did in an NHS run home. Yay for the Masons!:D

They reckon Jack The Ripper was a Freemason, as was the Chief of Police in charge of his murder cases. That's apparently how he got away with it and was never caught.

    masons are cool.

There are 3 degrees to being a mason, with the third degree being the master mason. You have to pass the first three degrees before you can become a member; then there are an further 33 optional degrees.

Its essentially a religious organisation which accepts one supreme being (you're just as likely to find jews as you are christians). At heart its a bi-religious organisation with a strong moral/ethical backbone and shared belief in a supreme being.... Some say it goes back to the second temple but most scholars think it goes back a few hundred years.

    1) You must believe in G-d i.e.; a supreme being, a higher power, etc.

    2) You must be a male and free born, 21 years of age and in good standing with your peers.

To join you simply go to your local lodge and ask, its that simple... Although most lodges are more welcoming if you're introduced by an existing member.

my dad got asked if he was interested by a mason in our town.

he's not really into secret meetings and the kind of things they do so he declined.

    Yeh

How do you become a freeman?

Our local masons lodge, you have to be an "upstanding member of the community" and basically get nominated by a member. You can't ask here, I've been asking about.
