    Magpies chairman Freddy Shepherd told the club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk: "He's a great young player and another player we have signed for the future - so we are delighted."

    Mystery surrounds Michael Ricketts' future with Bolton insisting they have not received a bid for the striker, despite Middlesbrough's claims a fee had been agreed.

    Boro announced earlier on Friday they had agreed a fee for the England international - believed to be in the region of £4million - and revealed Ricketts was in the process of travelling to Teesside to discuss the move and undergo a medical.

    But Bolton are denying any fee has been agreed, claiming Boro are yet to even table an official bid.

    A club spokesman told the Bolton website, www.bwfc.co.uk: "Contrary to reports, as of 3.30pm today, we had not had an official bid from Middlesbrough Football Club for Michael Ricketts.

    "There are still a few hours to go before the transfer window closes and we will monitor the situation and see if anything progresses."
