Only thing Sygate does is to block an IP for a while if it tries to attack you/port scan you - it doesn't do anything with the connection overall.

NIS is notorious for being a resource hog and not very good at what it does.

Its like McAfee - they sell this and Norton al over....trick ppl into thinking its all they need etc etc....basically it thrives on its brand name.

have you actually tried it, I think not. Your just one of these elitist computer freaks that thinks all the big computer companies are out to get you, It works like a dream, I never get any virus, never get any pop ups (and I mean never), it has a very good interface and basically it does everything you need it too.

believe it or not i have tried it!!! hahah!

like any1 else who has used computers for ages...they grow to know which apps are useless after using them for years and then realising they are shit. so they move onto things that actually do a job.

u dont have to believe me tho - u obviously know ur stuff

no i never bought it. i wouldnt dare buy it!!

    whats wrong with it?

    ok then here we go...

    a) its a system hog - FACT

    b) it doesnt pickup all the latest viruses as soon as it shud - FACT

    c) the firewall is not as good as a lot of the freeware firewalls available and the other commercial ones - FACT

    need to go on?

its not just personal opinion here fella, these are all facts....read up on it

so how did you test it if you didn't buy, don't tell me you used the demo, it only lasts for thirty days you can't test a firewall in 30 days, you might never get infected in thirty days without a firewall.

It's a system hog yeah I admit but I got an awesome computer so that doesn't effect me at all, and I make music on my computer and it doesn't effect me there neither, so buy a better computer if your computer can't handle a firewall, i'm betting though you do have a good computer so what are you moaning about.

It doesn't pick up new virus's fast enough, says who? The firewall never lets virus through anyway so why does it need to?

The firewall isn't as good as others, why? seems to me you've just speiled off some things from another website, and haven't tested it yourself, I want to no exactly what happened when you testing it to prove these things that you've said.

how can you not test something in 30days? 30days is AMPLE time to test!!! you can test how secure a firewall is in a few minutes never mind 30days!

and its not the fact my laptop cant handle it - it can - easily. but why shud i run something that takes up a lot more resource than something else...which happens to do a better job? :spangled:

just cos ur pc can handle it doesnt mean its ok?

the firewall never lets viruses through to your pc?!! sorry - but thats not true. you may not have been infected whilst u have been running NIS...cos u may have been careful....but if your average joe bloggs...unsuspecting as ever was to run along with only NIS on their machine...they would be riddled after a few months..

i think the fact is you have BOUGHT NIS...so you are not gonna admit its pants...u dont want to appear to have wasted your money.

spend some time trawling about the web reading up on firewalls and just see what the majority (not pc world and the likes) of "security experts" have to say about norton/mcafee and the other big boys.

i cant be arsed to go hunting about to prove it. i know myself after trying norton from the very 1st version, that is is *not* as good as a lot of the alternatives. thats enuf for me.

was only trying to pass on some ofmy findings to help u out - u dont have to take the advice tho - its ur pc

Norton Security centre is known to use up so many system resourses, be difficult to configue the firewall as securely as other firewalls and the anti virus agent isn't as thorough as other virus scanners.

it's ok for beginner/intermiediate users who want an "all in one, off the shelf" package...

but there's much better, individual packages that do the job....

    spot on mate

if you dont know what your doing - Norton will hold your hand and secure your pc a little for you....

but if you know your stuff (dont have to be an expert) you know to look elsewhere.

I know what your saying but it works perfectly, how can you say it doesn't if you don't have the package, you just quoting what other people say, don't forget the internet is now known as the most unreliable source of information in the world today. You can't trust what people say on the net. A lot of people don't have a clue about computers and just bad mouth everything becuase they enjoy it.

I'd say i've tested a lot of virus scanner/firewalls and they always seemed to let thinks through and then not have the definitions to remove the virus.

Norton is very good program and works perfectly, and to be honest I'm never gnna move from them now.

but i have already said i ave tried EVERY norton av/firewall product since they started....how come im just going off wat other ppl say??

norton is average and nothing more. if it does the trick for you though, thats fine..stick with it.

all am saying is there is better out there, both AV and Firewall...for free.

AVG Free - for your AV
Sygate Home - For your Firewall
MS AntiSpyware - For ur spyware
The modified hosts file as well

use them 4 and ur pretty much sorted.

a quick visit to housecall every other week wont go a miss either

I've used that avg and every time I got a virus it said it couldn't remove it, not very good imo. not tried the others though, but I can't be arsed cause I'm happy with Norton, it's doesn't cost me anything either cause my dad gets if from his work cause thats what they use.

    Fucking hell...

Create a batch file and put in: NET STOP "Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service" - then run it. See what happens (you'll have to look very closely though)? That (and similar) is what virus/trojan writers put in their code now.

Norton is easy to attack because only numpties stick with it. :D ;)

I'm testament to what sleepy n dodgy are saying in this thread.... i paid for Norton internet security 2005 last sept when i got my PC, used it for 4 months and got into a similar argument with dodgy.

He advised AVG/Sygate so i thought why not, installed them both free off the net, ran a virus check & Norton had let 6 Trojans onto my PC! The thread is kicking about somewhere.... firewalls part II is its name if i remember
