    Finding an IP address

Just got a laptop and need to find it ip address but the usual 'cmd' then 'ipconfig /all' isn't showing an ip address.

The computer can detect wireless networks in the area so its definitely working in that respect.

    Any ideas?

the computer may detect that there is a network present but this doesn't mean that it's connected, have you opened up the wireless configuration tool and tried to connect to a network?

The way our wireless network is set-up in the house I need to tell the main computer the ip address of the laptop so it'll let me connect.

If I try and connect it just comes up with an error, try and connect to any other wireless network and it asks for the network as it should so I know its working.

Just need to know the ip address so it'll let me on.

so are you trying to connect to another PC, or a wireless router?

You can't get an IP address without being connected. Try running ipconfig /renew at the prompt and see what it says

However if you use static IP addressing then you can go to My Computer > My Network Places > Network Connections

Then right click on your LAN connection, click properties, then select TCP/IP from the list, then select properties, then enter the IP info

if the router is set to DHCP, it'll issue you with an IP BUT are you sure it's not the MAC address it needs?

i can lock my router down by only issuing IPs to MAC it's recognises - wireless MAC filter. The MAC address or hardware Address will be 12 hexadecimal characters long - it'll be in the ipconfig /all screen, somethine like : 0012b36d9a25
