    External HD Problems...

My comp or my fathers comp womt recognise my external hd anymore, all the leads are fine, just nothing coming up at all.

was over 250gb of trance on there i have been collecting for about 4 years.
I dread to think i have lost all this, i would be seriously wounded:(

Is there a way to extract anything from this if it is a gonner??:cry2: :cry2:

    is it powering up?

you should still be able to access the drive. You could just remove it from it's enclosure and then hook it up to your PC

Its powering up fine, makes the usb daft noise, says maxtor usb device found.
then comes up with 'the device has malfuctioned, can not be recognised'

try it on another PC, if it does the same - you're stuffed. sounds like the host controller bit is working (the bit between the PC and the actual hard disk)

HOWEVER, if you dismantle it, inside there will be a standard hard drive - chuck it in your PC as a slave - job done.

The external HD is not recognised in either computers, it used to be until last night.

    BUT

what your saying is if i take it to bits and run it as a slave in adifferent computer all my data will be still there   ??

    Possibly.

You know whats weird, I was going to sign off my previous post saying "it's not a maxtor is it?" Wasn't aware they made external drives.

Fucking shite brand mate, seen so many of these drives fail. Fortunatley, i've been able to recover the data of most of them

Has been tested by the engineer at work and its the motor which has gone, been getting a few quotes from data recovery firms and its gonne be over the £300 mark.
needs to be done in a labrotory 'clean room' to extract the data from it.

think theres only one word atm - bumped

    :(

have been insinde of it, and its actually a seagate drive being used.
so basically its a seagate drive with a maxtor outer box,
    another thing also.....
Ghi computers had them in the sale as a '500gb' HD maxtor
Found out its only a '400GB' SEAGATE wtf??

somewhere along the line summit dodgy has happened hence the cheapness of them.:(:(

i dont really need the use of an external, so i just bought a reconditioned Seagate 500gb Internal for 30 quid, and i just back my stuff up on there, bearing in mind i've still got a 350gig, 40gig and a 5gig still in the machine. might just have a mass re-shuffle and whack em all on the 350, stick the 500 in the machine and just plug it in when i need it.

and can you get external SATA ports?
