    Exercising with a bad back

Is it best not to do any exercise? I hurt my back a week ago.. it was slightly painful on wednesday but I ignored it and went and played some basketball, then went to the gym. About 3 hours later I found it hard to even walk up the stairs. It was feeling ok again yesterday, but today there is a pain in my upper back that seems to have come on from the way i slept last night. I really wanna get back into the gym even if it's just for some light cardio or something because it's boring as shit here when you can't join in with the various activites that are always happening. Would I be ok using the leg machines in the gym or will that affect my back too?

Yeah don't exercise at all mate, your backs used for body and core stability on almost every exercise you do, doing exercise will only put more strain on and make matters worse.
How did you hurt your back in the first place?

Oh aye definitely avoid leg machines, probably more than anything, if it's nerve trouble you've got it could have caused a muscle spasm. When you do your legs your hamstrings will pull on your Glutes and totally fucking kill the nerves in your back, I know from experience and had to go see a sports physio.

And like I did, I went from having just a tweaked nerve to totally wrecking my back for 5 months. It's not something you mess with, but unfortunately you never listen until you've done it yourself lol.

Initially the pain came the day after I'd been to the gym, it was in the top of my back an felt like it was in one point. I got roped into going to the sports hall and playing around with the basket balls, not a game, just messing around. I was warmed up and felt fine after that so went to the gym but decided to only do a bit of running, bicep curls in a seated position with the elbow rested against the inner thigh, and leg exercises. Thinking back, I shouldn't have used the squat machine thing that you lie down on.. I used 60kg for 3 sets of 12 and I'm pretty new at it.. 3 hours later i could hardly walk up the stairs to my room.. the next day it was giving me hell too.

I have just been for a walk up Blencathra in the lakes though.. ididn't seem to give me any trouble. Hopefully i'll be saying the same thing in a few hours time :p

See my pain was lower back so I can't say exactly what you have, the pain itself would have went because you were warmed up, then once you'd cooled down again the muscle possibly tightened.

I certainly wouldn't mess with anything when having a bad back though, once your back goes you can't do fuck all. It might be a simple tweak that takes 2 weeks to go, or you could train, and cause more damage and be out for months.

go and see a physio they'll sort you out and tell you what you can/can't do

it might be something simple, it could be something else. doubt anyone on here is qualified enough to tell you via a message board.
