Manchester United have completed the signing of French defender Patrice Evra from Monaco.

The 24-year-old international has penned a three-and-half year deal at Old Trafford after completing all his medicals at the club's Carrington training headquarters.

The Senegal-born star can play on the left in defence or midfield, and Sir Alex Ferguson has already hailed the options that Evra will bring to United's squad.

United are believed to have paid around £5 million for Evra, taking United's spending to well over £10 million following the capture of Serbian Nemanja Vidic last week.

The left-sided star is pencilled in to figure in United's Carling Cup semi-final at Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports 1.

Evra was also targeted by Internazionale but opted to head for Manchester once he was made aware of Ferguson's intentions.:p

Hes a good signing but they dont really need him?

fair enough they want a left back but its not like they need one because of Europe its just for the league and FA Cup and im sure they could have coped with Silvestre there for the rest of this season.

As soon as Gabriel Heinze is back he wont get a game hardly
