    Ethiopia

One of the teachers at my school has a program going where selected students go to Ethiopia for 3 weeks next summer. I have been invited and I was just curious as to weather people have been/ what they know about it.

I attended a night on it tonight and I got the fundementals (of course, it was all positive).

I wondered, is there a high crime rate?

What is is the food like?

    Locals?

    Transport?

    Any helpful feedback please.

Im hoping for ONE thread to be serious. I genuinley want REAL answers.

    Thanks :D

    Firstly NO

    And

The teacher pays for a center to be run over there, he pays the wages, living costs and food expenses for 12 students and 6 staff :)

Were going into the mountains for a week, then working in the center for two weeks. I really cant wait, I have always wanted to do charity work, first hand will be a life changing experience.

    @ alexander- act your age

Go for it mate. Too many people see an easy excuse for doing nothing, but doing something like that would be a major achievement and stay with you.

    Do the right thing...

    Re: Ethiopia

    Hi allan

Sometimes there is a lot of crime and sometimes there isn't as much, it's usually somewhere round about down the middle.

The food can be really nice! however... stay clear of some places as it doesn't taste very nice at all.

Some of the locals are great people, I'd stear clear of others as they are not so great.

Sometimes the transport is really really good but sometimes it's best to walk as it can also be not so good.

Ethiopia is in africa and is nice sometimes the people there are nice i like it it's good go to Ehtopia or maybe just stay at home im not sure.

I did some browsing on google for you Sean, as i wish for your visit to this great country to be as enjoyable as possible.

    Population:
    74,777,981
note: estimates for this country explicitly take into account the effects of excess mortality due to AIDS; this can result in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality and death rates, lower population and growth rates, and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex than would otherwise be expected (July 2006 est.)

    Major infectious diseases:
    degree of risk: very high
food or waterborne diseases: bacterial and protozoal diarrhea, hepatitis A, typhoid fever, and hepatitis E
vectorborne diseases: malaria and cutaneous leishmaniasis are high risks in some locations
    respiratory disease: meningococcal meningitis
    animal contact disease: rabies
    water contact disease: schistosomiasis (2005)

    Airports - with paved runways:
    total: 14
    Airports - with unpaved runways:
    total: 70

    Illicit drugs:
transit hub for heroin originating in Southwest and Southeast Asia and destined for Europe and North America, as well as cocaine destined for markets in southern Africa; cultivates qat (khat) for local use and regional export, principally to Djibouti and Somalia (legal in all three countries); the lack of a well-developed financial system limits the country's utility as a money-laundering center

    Environment - current issues:
deforestation; overgrazing; soil erosion; desertification; water shortages in some areas from water-intensive farming and poor management (This might be a good one for your school debate team).

Well it's funny you should mention Sudan, as according to this old map i found in the cupboard, it may well be where Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan all meet...
