Looking forward to wednesday now, at least we now have a win under our belts:groovy: , would love to take something from the game.
sven needs to realise it isnt beckham he should be basing a team around its Rooney ...... :spangled: Beckham played well in his role as midfield anchor but lets face it against a better team he would have less time and wouldnt put the tackels in required he should be out on the right supplying the crosses or sumply out of the tean in favour of swp..... rooney is best when playing up front with a partner or just off the front ! hes our match winner and hes our future the sooner sven realises the better !
Slash mate, it might not have been the best performance but we won! The games in the USA in June or whenever we played class, but since denmark ppl have been writing us and Sven off Sven's record speaks for itself, he HAS NOT LOST a qualifying game since he became head coach. If sven did go....who would we get ?? and could they do a better job than sven ??
I hope we go back to 442 and play a hell of a lot better on wed, most teams would of stuffed us on sat
He wouldn't have experimented with 4-5-1 against most teams though. I don't see why everyone thinks it's shit to have tried a new formation against a team we were odds-on to beat whatever formation we played. I hope he tries it again on weds, may as well try it out on easier teams, and then have more options when it comes to bigger games.
Its one thing trying it but another thing trying it without the players to fit into that formation. Beckham as a holding midfielder? yeah he played well but there is no way he can play in that position agaisnt any of the bigger teams, he wouldnt even be able to play there comfortably against Poland or Austria.....he cant tackle. If your playing 5 in midfield then why not put Carrick in? im not saying hes a better player than Beckham but he'd find playing there alot more comfortable and do a better job defensivley which is what would be needed. then allow Lampard and Gerrard to do what they do best. Rooney isnt an out and out striker and playing him up top on his own doesnt allow him to do what he does best and thats drop a little deeper run at the defense or pick some passes so why not play him where he's playing at Man Utd as one of the midfielders just behind the main striker, and play Defoe on his own on Saturday untill Owens back, and then play Wright Phillips as the other supporting midfielder. Your fullbacks can get forward and Rooney and Wright Phillips will still give u the width you need as well as attacking options and both are very willing to track back when asked to......different formations are a good thing but not when you just try accommodate the same team as you would have in your other formation instead of picking a side that suits it.
I thought whole point of having 3 in the middle and 2 out wide was that you don't especially need a traditional holding player in the middle. With 5 in the middle there'd be a lot less space for other teams to get through (if the formation works according to plan anyway), meaning you wouldn't so much need a Vierra-type getting stuck in. I reckon with a bit of practice the formation could work, but agree Rooney's not ideally suited to it. The whole point of experimenting though is just to find some extra options/ideas, not find something we'll use for every match from now on.
england always play better with 2 up front and 4 along the midfield ------------Owen ----- Rooney--------------- cole-------Gerrard-----Lamps--------Becks that formation should play as much as it can toghether and non of this messing about malarky
