what sort of files are they & what will you be doing with them?

Are you encrypting files or entire folders?

Do you want to encrypt a file so it is locked from being opened of do you want to encrypt some text so its coded?

    PGP...

Tis the only decent option really.

Lets u encrypt files folder or whole partitions...

Can create for example a whole drive (PGPDisk) and mount/unmount as needed.

Can select encryption level to use - it works using personal & private keys...

    www.pgpi.com for more info.......

gis shout i fu need sorting with it .....

    Ok....

Your entire Hard Drive is not really a good option. One slip up with the password or a error saving and your fucked.

I would setup a secure "FOLDER" on your hard drive where you can store ALL personal files & emails etc.

You can move all of your secure files into this folder.

    I use BestCrypt
    <crack>

You can set it to auto start when Windows loads up. This will prompt for a password, if you dont have the password you can still use the PC just not access your private folder/container.

PGP disk is wot u need then :)

Basically just have a normal small partition with ya windows system installed onto it (and nothing else) then have the rest of ya drive partitioned and make it into a PGPDisk......

You can set this to not automount on system startup, or to prompt for a password if u set to automount....

Either way tis secure can grant/deny access quite easy.

PGP is owned by the US Goverment and has back door access.

    It is not secure.

The US Goverment also has agreements with Norton & Macaffe so that their Anti-Virus s/w does not pick up special FBI Virus that are installed on peoples pc's.

This sort of software was used to steal a mafia boss's passwords...

    Av never been sure....

To be honest i dont trust ANYTHING that isnt coded yourself...

I rekkon everything is full of backdoors.....

A case of dont trust anyone innit really......

Altho since Network Associates took over the license to PGP code i did become a lil more concerned.........

    Big Brother etc..........

The only version of PGP that is secure is version 6 (before it was bought by the worried Goverment)

The code for PGP was alway released on the interent to ppl could see that there was no secret back door access & that the s.w was 100% secure.

this was withdrawn as soon as Macafee bought it.

    It all goes on yeah.

However, nothing u can do really.

Any machine connected to net is vunerable and unsecure......

If you wanna keep stuff VERY secure then just store it on an offline machine...............

    Tis probs only way...
