    Possible culprits are -

    1. Your TV is too old

    2. Your TV is too old and doesn't have enough inputs, so you put the DVD into the video THEN into the telly. The fix here would be to put the DVD player directly into the telly, or get a switch box to switch between DVD & Video when you wanna use either.

WHY is it doing that to the picture????

Most DVDs have a copy protection scheme called Macrovision to prevent ppl videoing DVDs onto tape (and recording them onto other DVDs). The DVD player messes with the levels of the video signal (by putting extra pulses in where there normally aren't any) - when it's playing a copy protected DVD. Most if not all modern (made in the last 10 years) TVs should be okay with Macrovision signals (except some projection TVs). All modern video recorders are made to react this way to a copy-protected signal - DERRR!

If you REALLY don't wanna upgrade your telly, you can get hold of a 'copy enhancer' for about £40 which will strip out the macrovision copy protection. An alternative to that is to buy a different DVD player (one which disables Macrovision) or get your DVD player 'chipped' to disable it.

    Hope this helps

Hes right, sounds like Macrovision is feckin up somewhere, usually happens is you wire ur dvd player through some other device first (like vcr, sat receiver)

Crasherkid - you have 2 choices to avoid buying a new telly.

    1. If your telly has a front (or rear) AV input on phono sockets, get a scart to phono lead (normally one yellow one red one white phono plug to scart plug) and use that.

    2. If your telly hasn't got the above, you'll need what's called an RF modulator (sold @ Maplins for £29.99, order code:VH89W) to convert the signal from yer DVD player to frequencies like wot comes down yer aerial like. BTW one snag with this - no bloody point having a spanking DVD player connected this way coz the picture will look almost as bad as a videotape :(

    Messy innit?

So your choices basically boil down to:

    1. Buy a new telly or swap yer DVD player for one wot mangles Macrovision.
    2. Get a Macrovision mangling 'copy enhancer' for about 40 squids
    3. Get an RF modulator-thingummybob from Maplins for £30 squids.
    4. Sell yer DVD player & DVDs and buy some special pills. Eat the pills, then stare at the blank telly long enough with this and you can see almost anything you like :D
    5. See if you can get yer DVD player 'chipped' (yes similar to Playstation 'chips' in principle) - you'll get multiregion functions built in too :)

    6. Last thought - your DVD player MIGHT actually have a thingy on the menus to turn off Macrovision. What make & model is it?
