    Dual Boot Linux

I have just reformatted my PC and set aside 30 of my 160 gigs on my main HDD as a partition on which to install Linux. Anyone got any hints as to what a decent distro would be just for general use and familiarizing with Linux? I don't need ease of use functionality that much ( I am a sysadmin of a Windows network, know what I am doing with PCs ), security and stability would be nice features to have.

    Running AthlonXP3000+ overclocked from 12.5x to 14x, Seagate Baracuda HDD, 1024 DDR 333, DVD-RW, GeForce FX 5200 :(

You could always give Lindows a try out to see if you like that - you can boot it off a cd first without installing and screwing up your hard drives with linux partitions etc.

Failing that, i hear gentoo linux is quite nifty.

That's what I was saying he should get too.

I've been doing a bit of research about Linix and the above are mentioned regularly.

Mandrake has a particularly nice GUI.

It's unlikely that you will screw your hard disk like mate, Cooper did it on his pc and had no problems!

Can't you use something like partition magic just to be on the safe side?

Another thing....where do u get them from? I know it's free to download....theres probably sites for each of the distros.

Let me know how u get on :D

    www.freebsd.org
    www.slackware.com

I think you need at least ISO1 to install Mandrake, the others are Programs etc, Ive got all 3 ISO's of Linux Mandrake 9.2. Dont really use Linux at all though.
I wouldnt recommend Lindows, its ok but not really as good as Mandrake IMO.

it depends largely on the distro you use.... I know from using red hat 9.0 that there are 5 ISOs to download, but two are documentation and extras, and you don't need them to do a full install :)

I just want to learn more about it, to be comfortable accross different systems, to expand knowledge basically. I spent last semester doing Unix and uni and found it interesting....I might aswell do linux too.

Not bothered if i can't draw pictures of edit photos on it :)

I have downloaded the 3 gig Fedora DVD ISO if anyone is interested. Will download and deploy Mandrake 10 2nite.

Chris, I don't think I will fuk it up either, but as the above poster implied, many people have said this and not all were right.

Fancy chipping in for the alcohol this week? I'm bloody skint, gotta go to Birmingham early next month, will cost a canny bit.

Juski, it's just for something to do, also it's a useful skill to acquire, especially when we have a Linux box at work running as a firewall and internet admin system, the maintenance is outsourced, if I could do basic tasks without a 4 hour callout for the engineers it would help a lot.
