Download programs on a Uni network OK, so I figured it would be class when I brought my PC to uni since I'm hooked up to the stupidly-fast network However, for some reason I can't get Soulseek, Kazaa, DC++, BitTorrent, or even crappy old Download Accelerator to work! I'm guessing the network has some way of blocking these, is there any way around it? (Or am I just an idiot and need to change some settings or something?) Help!
Re: Download programs on a Uni network Most uni's have their internal networks tied down so they're tighter than a fish's flange. I know at ours (Northumbria) that you can't plug a machine into the wall without it refusing your connection, only way to get on the net is spoof the MAC and IP of the machine next to you Don't bother mate, you'll be breaking a fair few of the regs just plugging it in and you face expulsion if you get caught. Do your 'downloading' on your home connection
uni networks block the download ports used by p2p wares, and is highly against university regulations. Technically they can chuck you out for looking at porn
Re: Re: Download programs on a Uni network But uni's allow you to use your own machines! You can use a proxy for some programs, it's the ports that the software uses that is blocked though. You will just have to live with it mate! Just a note....if you Spoof a MAC address then the machine will authenticate with the DHCP server and you will be issued with an IP address anyway, so you don't need to do both Of course, they can't both be on at the same time.
Cheers people...though in response to the "don't even plug it in" thing...well, they kinda put a port in my bedroom and gave me a network cable and a CD on the first day, along with a book entitled "How to connect your PC to the University network"....So I'm guessing I'm allowed to connect Oh well, nevermind
Re: Re: Re: Download programs on a Uni network The only way we're allowed to do it is using a wireless link with a laptop (which has been specially set up to prevent you downloading loads of stuff or even running non-approved programs) or we have to get written permission from IT support to plug a machine into the network. Most uni's don't let you use your own machine unless you have written permission. If you've been given the CD and stuff give it a go, but the uni will have probably blocked all the ports not in use, so stuff like p2p and soulseek probs won't work. It varies from uni to uni. I've got a mate who's at warwick and she can download whatever she wants, but most uni's don't let you do that
Re: Re: Re: Re: Download programs on a Uni network wtf? That will mean around the uni itself...as in yanking out a cable from a Uni machine and plugging it into your own machine. If it's halls, its different. Otherwise why would they give the cd "Most uni's don't let you use your own machine unless you have written permission." To be fair, thats not true mate. I am using my own machine right now, and I dont have any written permission, just had to register my machine. All my mates who are at uni have their own machines in their halls, which have both wired and wireless internet access as standard. Unlimited downloads, some restrictions but very few. The only thing blocked at my uni is mIRC. Obviously dobbs has a few more things blocked, but he is obviously allowed to be using his PC.
i work at northumbria in IT, i KNOW the rules/regs. you'll get caught in the end. end of story. spoofing MACs is bollocks and will also get you caught. ONLY Northumbria equipment can be connected to the network - laptops via wireless can be - but this is authenticated using an ID. i download nothing at work, except some mixes occasionally - but ALL FILES are monitored, excessive downloads, i.e. large amounts of network traffic is monitored - they can tell what files u are getting and from where.
MAC address spoofing probs wouldnt work anyway, as it wouldnt authenticate unless it was a genuine address from another machine, plus its tricky! Seems VERY strict that like. Must have a right team of little Hitlers on the sys admin team
it's JANET regulations that cover all academic establishments. stop us getting prosecuted, attacked by compromised machine infecting the network and makes sure univerisity facilities are used for academic studies and NOT downloading illegal shite.
