do we need more police?

Its the usual mind games played on the public:

"MORE POLICE = LESS CRIME" .... but is that true?

"NEW LAWS = XXXXX (RANDOM ATROCITY) WILL NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN" .... will it?


People are eternally led further and further down the path to complete control over their lives, and its always sold on the back of something else entirely that they know is a sure fire hit with the electorate.

As time goes on, i'm less inclined to believe any of it. Last night it was Barnardo's saying that children should be taken into care earlier, and then cite a few tear jerking cases when things were too late, or ones where they got in early. But dig a little deeper and all it means is that people will have their kids taken away from them for increasingly smaller things, and also have more pressure from 'social workers' on them at all times.

Obviously this goes against nearly everything your told to think, but after 10-20 odd years of watching and experiencing changing governments and policies, you'd think we were at least going in some sort of right direction? Not so sure about that personally.

Going back to what forks said, its hard not to think of the police of a bunch of people telling us how to live our lives, or coming after us for increasingly minor 'offences'. When it comes to the job of 'protecting' and 'serving' then its difficult to come up with an example where the police DIDNT turn up late, or not at all when someone was burgled, or a car window was put through or whatever. The police managed to shut down the one thing i wanted to go to this year on the festival roster (Glade), on the basis of nothing more than than setting an arbitary figure on how much WE should be charged for THEM to search us for drugs with sniffer dogs - nice!

The world you live in today, is different to the one you lived in 10, 20, 30, 40+ years ago is it not? And is there MORE or LESS control being placed upon you.

Last i checked, stating the fucking obvious wasn't in the same category as looking for UFO's or faces on Mars.

Still, I don't think things are as bad as you make out. Police aren't the problem, their political masters are. Just witness some of the stupid shit the last government brought in (ID cards, some of the more questionable terrorism legislation, etc).

I'm hoping this government makes a better job of it. They're already off to a decent start...
