DJ question : Harmonic Mixing How many of you buddings jocks out there actively use/consider harmonics when your mixing live or putting together CD's and stuff?
excellent topic Am interested to hear who uses this myself. I wonder if all the top DJs use it I know that Armin does defo, heard him talking about it after a set once. I have just retrieved my old 80s keyboard from storage and am gonna have a play about at sorting my records harmonically at some point...Still need to do loads of reading about it tho...
Although im still very much practicing the basics .... im wondering if some of my more god awful mixes were the fault of dumb harmonic choices, rather than terrible technical skills.... And vice versa. When burning and putting together tracks, i wonder if i should be marking the key of the tune for future reference ....
if you know the key then yes I would label it There's a website somewhere which has all the possible transitions between keys.
Mixing in key pretty much just comes with practice Brid mate, the majority of music that I play now is tech based so its theres no real need to think about doing it because of the way most of the tracks are structured if you see what I mean? When playing a trance set it sounds so much better
you can just tell if they are in the same key anyway. Its usually the bass you have to be carefull of in trance...dont worry about it too much.
Re: DJ question : Harmonic Mixing I suppose it could be a good idea... are you on about that thing that they play in the country .. the mouth organ but it is called a harmonic aswell aint it?
mixing is all about the feelin man :chill: stop trying to make it sound like i'm back at school. it's meant to be fun - enjoy it. u make me think i'm going to have to take a test soon or something... :spangled:
Like you say man theres always got to be one .. and today it was me!! lmao!! only having a giggle m8 no malice!
IMO for prog harmonic mixing is really important as it helps with the build. If you cant get two tracks in the same key create a loop towards the beginning of the second track and mix into that. That way you can stretch out the intro and not have to worry about the basslines clashing, as well as being able to pull off a 5 min mix, which sounds mint anyway.
there's a thread on the Armin board where he explains it a little and give's a few record title's to have a go with (trance of course)
