    Dilemma: CDJ800 MK2's or the new CDJ400??

    Which should I get next week??

    The trusty 800?

    Or the new CDJ400 with midi capability and USB playback?

    [ame="http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=FFfoNW1QyQo"]YouTube- cdj400 demo[/ame]

    [ame="http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YDywl0n0gqM&feature=related"]YouTube- Pioneer CDJ-400 scratch demo[/ame]

    I've noticed the new 400 in a few other threads but when pitted against the 800 which is worth the money?

    :)

    the whole midi/mp3 thing is defo the way forward. I like the look of some of these new bits of kit, especially the denon 5500, you can plug a laptop, ipod, or removable HDD into it and it pulls the music out ready to play (I'm not sure but I think the CDJ400 may do something similar)... Once pioneer and others start putting that kind of functionality on all their gear it'll be awesome - I'd rather carry a removable HDD or ipod with all my stuff on round than 6 folders full of CDs :)

    fo'sho.

    its yet another step down in terms of gear a DJ carries now. before it used to be shit loads of vinyl, then it was CD's and now a Dj's just gonna turn up with his Ipod and memory stick and perform a set out of something you can fit in your pocket.

    and then you have the technical advantages such as higher quality tracking and the fact that hard drives dont skip :)

    Why the hell would you want to play music off an IPod...its renowned for having low quality sound?

    Whats the point in clubs spending thousands upon thousands on unreal soundsystems if the djs arent willing to play the best quality of medium?

    Whats the benefit of that?

    If a dj cant pick out 50 tracks worth playing (the contents of an average record bag) then they shouldnt be behind the decks. My CD wallet has around 280 cds in it yet I probably only use 10 (max) of the cds in 2 hours.

    Arent djs meant to be playing loads of "new and upfront' stuff rather than the same tracks theyve been playing for 7 months?

    All this 'I can carry 20,000 tunes around' is a load of billy big bollocks...Im willing to bet a shag with MistaK's sexy mama that they only play 20-30 of them in the average set. How the hell can you remember all 20,000 of them and suddenly get a light bulb over your head and think 'oh man track 13,128 is gonna rock this joint!!!'

    If you are a requests dj then fine but for all these cool, underground types then all this technology isnt actually of any benefit.

    The ipod's line out isn't that good in terms of quality, but thats not what's being used to play media on the 5500/400. The ipod acts as a giant hard drive and the player actually decodes the music and pumps it out, so the quality is no worse than the MP3 file being used (just like with a laptop or an MP3 burned to CD).

    I certainly agree with that point though. I know that from being a commercial DJ I have to have a wide and varied choice of music with me (because the crowd usually ask for all sorts, not just this weeks chart stuff.)

    I disagree with it not being of any benefit to anyone though. As the technology improves and is applied in better ways, this allows us to use the music and equipment in ways we didn't think possible before (ableton's a good example of this). From my point of view this is a good thing - it encourages people to push the boundaries and be a bit more creative.

    Some of these bits of gear will always fall by the wayside and become obselete or be useless from the start (for example the ipod mixer), but others will help to drive things forward and I think the current Pioneer/Denon midi/mp3 players are definite examples of where things could (and maybe should) go in future.

    leave my mother out of this! :lol:

    you dont use the line out for the ipod, u use a USB connecter-ma-bobby. so it's basically like a harddrive, i do agree with you point about having all of worlds music in your hand, but its seems to be the way things are progressing these day's.

    CD's will be obsolete soon, just as tapes are and just as vinyl is starting slowly to dissapear for ever, although it has stood its ground over the years.

    i dont think blue-ray will ever take off - its minidisc all over again :lol:

    Sorry didnt know about the IPod connection....

    Dont IPods convert all the files to a lower quality AAC? e.g. if I put a WAV file onto an IPod then its shrunk down to an AAC file?

    As for vinyl, I reckon there are enough purists out there to ensure that vinyl is still going for years to come, you might not be able to get the Top 10 on Beatport on vinyl but the more 'underground' stuff will still be coming out on the black stuff imo.

    Cant wait till I have a proper job so I can buy records instead of 1101001010101

    nope, ipods can play WAV & MP3 as well as AAC. I've set up itunes to import any CD I put in at 320kbps MP3.

    yeah same here.

    as default, the import as AAC so you just change your preferences. i've got rockbox on mine - so that supports OGG and FLAC

    still, all i seem to listen to is steams ripped at 128 or 192 :(

    Yhea I used Itunes to rip CD's but doesnt the device itself actually convert them to a lower quality file during the transfer?

    Theres also no point in having hi quality music files if you are using those ipod headphones

    Si - AAC is a lossless compression format as far as i know, so its as good as WAV

    (I think).
