    diabetic cat..

patch is getting old, and he's deaf and now diabetic. he's senile (over 16, cant be sure) and howls when he's left alone. loads. too much in fact.

in the past few months he's also been drinking/pissing like a racehorse. a friend tells me this is a sign of diabeties and a lot of older cats get it.

i've had proper full on barneys with him in the mornings just to use the sink, if i turn the tap on he takes my face off just to get a drink and my pussy frequently joins me in the shower for a quick lick. if he finds a puddle outside he's licking it, and i dread to think what he'd do if i staggered into the bathroom one night and missed the toilet too pissed to see where i was dribbling..

what i'm worried about is what happens if we leave the diabeties - we couldnt afford the treatments and frankly, he's too old to pay lots of vets fees to have it looked at and pay for the insulin he probably needs.

i dont know whether we should have him put down or just let him be and see how he gets on. does anyone else have any experience of this happening to cats?

Could well be diabetes dude, that's the sort of symptoms a human would get - should be a 2 minute test at the vets, worth doing

I love patch, never met him but seen so many pictures and he is just soooo cute...loved that one of him and the shoe. :)

doesn't sound like diabetes to me though, sounds like his kidneys.

we lost Iona, zwerver, walter and charlie to their kidneys, but they were all 17+..hes got life in him left...taking him to the vets is very good idea though, they will get him on some tablets that will make things a little easier for him.

Just make sure he does always have water out and available...get him one of those water dispensers and some apposable thumbs and he'll be sorted :)

Also..sorry to put a downer on things, but he is going to go one day...years in the future when we all live in bubbles and insects are our masters...but when he's ready, please dont take him to the vets...pets hate the vets, we dont want their last few minutes to be spent terrified...even if you have to change vets, get one that will make house calls. One year, a long time ago we went to the pantomine on boxing day...we came back to find out 18 year old torty Mandy mewing terribly, she sat down infrount of the fire and couldnt get up..our vet came out at 11pm on boxing day..she had her last few hours being in a place she loved being warm and cuddled....you'd want it for you too :)

But patch has a few years in him yet, hes too soft and fluffy and lovely :)

post another picture of the lovely pussy :)

Take him to the vet. He may be suffering and it's not kind to do nothing.

With Nass having this cat so long it will be like a part of the family!

He is so cute and lovely and my older cat George who is about 15 has started making wailing noises when left alone and for no reason, he has started acting like a kitten again too so im presuming hes half senile but we still really love him. I doubt vet treatment will be that much and Im sure they will tell you how much it is before you pay for it. If I was you I would really try to keep him for longer!@

a lot of older cats do the wailing noise when they're on their own apparently.. if he knew you were there (by shouting PATCH MAN!) he stopped straight away, but now he's deaf there's no end until you stroke him (and he jumps out of his skin if you sneak up on him).

i dont want him to go :(

i'm gonna ask my mam if she'll take him to the vet.. it may not be diabeties..

Patch had Kidney failure causing it to enlargen 4 times it's normal size, also causing a heart murmour. This was the cause of his massive thirst and silly behavior (lack of blood in the brain).

He was given a sedative to send him to sleep and then put down quietly at 9.30.

His last drink of water was off the condensation on mam's bedroom window.. i'm sure we did the right thing.

    RIP Patch :(
