the last time i defragged my comp, i hadnt done it in a bloody long time.... it took over 6 hours to do it. mind i had 60 gig's worth of shit rammed into it.

i just cant be bothered to do it again. it really needs to be re-formatted, but i have that many things i would need to back up, it would take HOURS to back them up....

Your best off leaving it on overnight to do it. Mine takes fucking ages too.

is it not best to run defrag in safe mode? as this stops most changes being made to the drive while defrag is running so the defrag will run quicker

aye, kid's right, safe mode is best - otherwise it keeps restarting cause it thinks programs are running - if u let it run overnight, you'll get up in the morning to find its done chuff all. Does XP have a similar startup menu where u can select safe mode though?

make sure screen savers are turned off - also look at the power management options - monitors, hard disks, stuff like that. Close as much shite in yer system tray. Could also use the Services in control panel to shut loads of things off.

make sure when you defrag that the disk has plenty of space free. If you try to defrag a 100gb disk that is 98% full, it's gotta shuffle a shit load of files about in a tiny space, give it bout 10% free i.e. 100mb free on a 100gb HD
