IVAN SMAGGHE Selected Biography ************************************************************* Ivan Smagghe is renowned for being one of the most original and inspired DJs of the moment with a unique talent for constantly discovering sounds that no-one has heard or dared use before to such great effect. From his earnest beginnings working for the now defunct Rough Trade shop inParis, Ivan's DJ career spans more than 20 years. His highly respected radio show 'TEST' ran on Radio Nova (the premier radio station in Paris) for two years, spawning the four exceptional 'TEST' compilations as well as earning him a reputation as one of the most respected DJs in France. In 1997 Smagghe and Arnaud Rebotini (a colleague at Rough Trade) created Black Strobe. 'Innerstrings' was the result which was released on their own label, 'Black in Black'. It was heard by Trevor Jackson who promptly signed it to his Output label. It garnered heavyweight support from Weatherall, Laurent Garnier and DJ Hell and predated the neo-electro scene from which the duo would find a like-minded band of friends like James Murphy of The DFA, Berlin-based producer Ewan Pearson and Canadian dandy Tiga. The demand for his DJing has been meteoric over the last ten years and if you don’t get the chance to see him in the flesh then you can have a taste of what you’re missing on his many outstanding compilations such as 'HARD!' compilation for Chronowax , Kill The DJ for Tigersushi (www.kill-the-dj.com),‘Death Disco’ on NEWS/Eskimo, ‘Suck My Deck’ on Bugged Out!/React, Fabric, London, the disconcertingly brilliant ‘Dysfunctional Family’ mix with Chloe on Kill The DJ, his mix for the legendary Cocorico Club in Rimini, Italy and soon to come his offering for the 4 part mix CD special released by the Robert Johnson club in Frankfurt alongside DJs Chloe and Prinz Thomas. Ivan’s longest running Parisian residency was at the legendary lesbian PULP club in Paris (which sadly closed down in March 2007) and as for the rest of the world; he has amassed residencies at Fabric (London), Kill The DJ (Worldwide), Bugged Out! (Various – UK/Worldwide), Robert Johnson (Frankfurt), Mondo (Madrid), Space (Ibiza) and plays regularly all over Europe, Japan, South America and Australia. *************************************************************
I have to admit, I did not expect Smagghe to have this accent! [ame="http://vimeo.com/1317032"]We Love... Ibiza 2008 Episode 4 on Vimeo[/ame] Some nice bits of footage of him playing at space, plus i nice bit of accidental slagging directed at other clubs. Also, In case you haven't got on it, here's his live Kill The DJ set from The Rex Club Last year. Stirring stuff [ame="http://www.zshare.net/audio/656963094e531cce/"]zSHARE - File Not Found[/ame]

Thanks Stu. I really enjoyed playing early doors and Ivan was fucking immense when he came on. It was great to see so many familiar faces considering what else was on in town and the fact that it was only our second night.
