    Curfew on kids

I heard on the radio last night that there is a plan to put a curfew on youngins' in Northumberland. 21:00 I think they said.

I personally think it's a great idea. If it's true and it happens, it will cut crime by a heck of a lot. I know some people will say it's unfair on the majority who don't commit crime, but they reckon that the minority is about 15-20% of kids. That's a lot of kids! I'd rather they were indoors putting graffitti on their school bags than on my garage or fence.

Theyre starting it in some parts of Durham i think...there are a lot of problems with it at the mo though i think cos it breaches basic human rights (according to the ECHR) so although it's a good idea, how widespread the scheme will get i dont know

if the parents can't do a good enough job, then the feds should. i reckon it's a good idea too. they bang on about civil liberties, but it's right what they say - what about the liberties of residents. maybe 9pm in the summer is a bit harsh....

They have already introduced a curfew in parts of cleveland including redcar and where I live, saltburn... its a good thing imo cos the kids are all gobshites. I think public floggings for some of them would be much better

They say that older criminals cant be on the streets (ie locking them in jail) why cant they keep the younger ones under control too? So that they dont grow up to be locked in a prison somewhere

I think its a good idea to an extent.

I would hopefully assume that such curfews would not be in place everywhere, but rather only in the areas that actually needed it.

It's a bit harsh keeping kids in in a place where there is practically 0% crime rate....

As for the little charvas though, lock them away and throw away the key, the little shites.

But you also have to look at what constitues public disorder.....any kids, wether or not they are causing trouble, who hang around in big groups on housing estates etc are seen primarily as trouble makers.

Indeed this is often true, but alot of them arn't - we used to play football at a park at the top of our estate and about 4 or neighbours would call the police every day. The police would come loads. The found some "drug paraphinalia" reasonably close by, and tried to say it was us, aswell as being fuckin arrogant when we and our parents told them to go and actually solve some crimes, like one of our mates break ins etc. The police see kids like us as an easy target, hassle free, nice estate....jobs worth there. "Lets go take their addresses for playing football, thall impress the super." (Incidently that actually happened to us, the copper involved was a complete arsewipe and expressed the stereotypical police arrogance - of course there are loads of good blokes, they once caught us drinking and simply said, so long as those bottles go in the bin and you dont cause trouble, we won't bother you!)

So yeah, such a scheme could be great where its needed but serious facts and figures need to be assessed before they take away innocent kids freedom.
