    Crouch to Liverpool

Peter Crouch is travelling to Liverpool with a view to sealing a move to Anfield.

The Southampton striker, capped by England during the end-of-season tour of the United States, is to undergo a medical with the UEFA Champions League winners after being allowed to complete a dream switch.

Rafa Benitez is closing on getting all the pieces of his jigsaw with Real Madrid winger Luis Figo also a top target for the Spaniard.

Former Tottenham, Queens Park Rangers, Aston Villa and Portsmouth hit-man Crouch will cost in the region of £7 million and will sign a four-year contract if he passes his medical.

A number of Premiership clubs were trailing the lanky marksman, who enjoyed a fine season last term.

"What's special about him is he's 6ft 8ins," Saints boss Harry Redknapp told Sky Sports News. "That's probably the most special thing.

"He's got terrific touch, he's good in the air, has a good understanding of the game and is a fantastic player. He's a good lad and has not been a minute's problem even when this has been going on.

"He's had Liverpool [after him] and many players would have thrown their dummies out of the pram but he's come in every day, worked hard and been a fantastic example to everybody.

"This is the second time I've sold him - I sold him at Portsmouth for £5 million, so maybe I'll meet him again and sell him again!

"I wish him well and I'm sure he'll be a big success at Liverpool."

Liverpool have completed the signing of Peter Crouch from Southampton.

The 24-year-old has penned a four-year deal at Anfield after passing a medical.

The Reds have paid £7 million for the England international, who is delighted to have made the move to Merseyside.

"I am thrilled to be joining a club as prestigious and successful as Liverpool," said Crouch.

"Once I heard of their interest in me it was hard not to think about what it would be like to pull on the famous red shirt and play in front of the Kop, but I was also very aware of my responsibilities towards Southampton.

"Under almost any other circumstances I would have committed myself to helping Southampton regain their Premiership status. There is a great group of players at the club and I am sure they will be successful in the coming seasons.

"I am also very grateful to Harry Redknapp for everything he has done in my career to date, he made it clear he would not stand in my way over this transfer move.

"The chairman has also handled the negotiations with both me and the other clubs professionally and fairly and I would like to thank both of them for the way they have conducted themselves during these discussions.

"I would also like to thank all the Southampton fans for their support and wish everyone at the club a successful season."

Benitez was happy to have finalised the move, and added: "I'm delighted we have signed Crouch.

"He is a good player with a lot of good qualities and his arrival will give me more options up front.

"I think he will be ready for the game against Olympiakos on Saturday night. It depends on his physical condition but he has been training with Southampton so he should be okay."

I think he's a bit of a James Beattie tbh, has a couple of good seasons then does fuck all. Wouldn't of minded him at the Toon, but not sure how his future will go

We are used to paying stupid sums for players, but it is quite steep

I laughed when Redknapp said that its madness how a team has paid £7m for a player 7 months ago they wouldnt of paid over £700,000
