    copying club names??

just had an invite on facebook for a night calling itself 'shine' at the park hotel in tynemouth.

now to me, shine is pretty much belfasts biggest / longest running / most famous club night, the place Phil Kieran's resident at.

seems pretty silly to use a name for your club night that's already being used by someone elsewhere in the country, particularly when it's an internationally renowned club brand that's been around for years.

but maybe that's just me, and it has been a while since I had to come up with a name for a club night, but we'd at least have a scan through mixmag / google the name before using it.

I think you're right in saying you should do research before naming a club night, mix cd or whatever.
A decent original name is all part of the spin.

There's a Promise and Colours in the midlands and the Promise event was running back when Promise used too.

There's also and E:volve in the midlands i think.

There's a Ketaloco in Belgium (granted, the English one is spelled Ketoloco).

Does it go against section 4.1.3.1 of the 'Electrofried Guide To Being A Club Promoter'?

And KeToLoCo was originally held @ DC15 (students basement), got raided and shut down, then popped back up again as DC16.

Might not be a carbon copy, but they weren't very original and have been mildly successful so far.

I agree with what Gav's saying though. A bit of originality doesn't harm anyone.

it's not really that, but if the night takes off and does get bigger there could be problems down the line - like if they ever wanted to get their residents guesting elsewhere and start sticking shine on the flyers after their name etc.

Shine belfast may well have protected their name anyway, and even if not, they've got a legit prior claim to it, so if this lot ever got to being noticed by shine belfast and they decided to take action to protect their name, then they could do at any point meaning that all the work that the new lot had put into building up their reputation would be wasted coz they'd have to change their name.

there's a fair few Belfast students in the north east who follow the shine name as we've found out when we've put phil kieran / alloy mental on and found ourselves surrounded by pissed / off their tits irish people rabbitting on about how good shine is etc so it's not like nobodies going to notice.

if someone set up a night called gatecrasher that had fuck all to do with gatecrasher this board would be ripping the piss out of them for it, this is the same IMO though shine is a bit lower profile than that.

we had an issue when we were doing our midweek 'Freak' nights for a bit as a night in liverpool had also been using the name for a few months - we managed to work round it by agreeing to only use the freak name in newcastle, for our midweek events, which was all we'd really been intending to do anyway... I'd checked the name briefly, but hadn't noticed this lot as they were fairly new and smallscale.

I'm also aware there's a mid week indie student night somewhere called freaky dancing that started after us, but I'm not too arsed as it's obviously different to us.

anyway, it's just a bit of a daft thing to do IMO.

inspired by... well actually it was a quote from bez that I read in altered states, which stuck in my head as a good name for a club night.

    bit different though innit

    My thoughts exactly

The fact that this night is at the Park probably spells they wont have the faintest idea about anything to do with Clubbing so I doubt there much to worry about.
