Converting .avi to .mp4 whilst keeping high quality/suitable aspect ratio?

What do you all use? I've been trying to convert an episode of My Name Is Earl for about an hour now but each time it changes the aspect ratio. I've tried Xilisoft Ipod Video Converter and Videora Ipod Converter so far with no luck..

Fullscreen videos are fine but widescreen is causing problems :(

I dunno if those settings will convert all videos properly but it's a start. U can also up the bit rates to improve quality although the same I did with the lower settings looks perfect.

Anyone know any MPEG converters that'll allow aspect ratio changes?

I've tried Cucusoft, Main Concept, WinAvi, Xillisoft etc but the closest I get is with WinAvi but it keeps tearing the video :(

Well scrap my method for converting full length films. I get an annoying audio/video sync problem half way through the movie  Same happens in Xilisoft only it's a lot faster to convert. I thought the extra time taken by Videora must be due to sync corrections or something :(
